Cory Lupovici is never shy on bringing laughter to any room he is in. He finds inspiration from the quirks of everyday observations and of course from his distinctive Chinese/Jewish heritage. Not only is he busy performing around Vancouver but also in the process of co-producing a show. He is creating a buzz in the Vancouver comedy scene and we got the chance to speak with him to discover more.
How would you describe your comedy style?
It’s pretty observational. Most of the observations are about my background and my upbringing since I have a pretty unique mix, my mom is Chinese and my dad is Jewish, so it’s a seemingly never-ending well of material. Either that or just silly little observations about everyday things.
Who are some of your influences?
Mitch Hedberg, Mike Birbiglia, Scrubs (the TV show), John Mulaney.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Mitch Hedberg, hands down.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
John Mulaney.
What is your pre-show ritual?
Not much of a ritual, but I make sure to get to the venue with enough time to figure out what jokes I’m going to do and write them down in my notebook. Then I just sort of sit there and think about it. Take some deep breaths. That sort of thing.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
The Comedy Mix in Vancouver, when it was open. Performing there was the first time I felt like, “Oh man, this is the real deal”. It just felt really legitimate and professional.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
Hard to pick a favourite because you eventually move on from a joke and have new favourites. But as of right now, I have one about how as a dude, there is so much I don’t know about the female anatomy, and I am proud of it because it does well and gets a lot of laughs. Nothing too deep haha.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
I actually don’t really consume that much comedy in my free time as much as I did before starting stand-up. I guess I would say podcasts/albums. But I mostly just wait for new specials/albums from the comedians I already know and get recommendations from comedian friends when they find someone they really like.
Tell us a joke about your city.
I don’t have a joke about Vancouver, but I do have one about White Spot if that counts?
I like White Spot, but I have one problem with it, and that’s the name. It sounds a tad racist. That would be like if a white person asked me to recommend a Chinese restaurant and I told to you go to somewhere called ‘Yellow Place’. They would say, “I don’t think that place is for us..”
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I am co-producing a show with my buddy Ernie Hart, but it is still in the works, so please follow our socials and keep an eye out for the announcement! We are aiming for a show in early fall.
