“A Day in the Life” with: Vancouver Visual Artist Lay Hoon Ho

There’s a natural confidence to Lay Hoon Ho (Arty Guava), a sense that she is always exactly where she’s meant to be. She doesn’t just follow her dreams, she lives then and inspires others to do the same, with courage, heart, and an unwavering sense of self.

For Lay Hoon, becoming an artist was more than just talent; it was about trusting her instincts and embracing the unknown. Born in Malaysia, she moved to Vancouver with her family during the isolating pandemic years. She embraced creativity and independence, walking away from her bioengineering degree and role as an Art Director to pursue her passion. Now, her illustrations and paintings grace murals, gallery walls, and major collaborations with brands like Herschel and Oprah, all while staying true to the culture and stories that shaped her.

Beyond the art, it’s Lay Hoon herself who leaves a lasting impression. Thoughtful and deeply perceptive, she has a way of finding beauty and joy in everything around her, and inspires those around her to embrace possibility and live in the present. Her work is an extension of who she is: bold, full of life, and with just the right amount of mischief.

Which neighbourhood are you in?

I’m based in Gastown, Vancouver’s historic heart—a place where old-world charm meets modern energy. You’ll find cobblestone streets and heritage buildings alongside chic boutiques and buzzing restaurants. It’s the perfect mix of character and creativity, which I love!

What do you do?

I’m a Vancouver-based artist blending my Malaysian heritage, love of nature and dance into vibrant, joyful artwork. My pieces feature dancing figures, playful animals, and energetic landscapes – always with a touch of magical realism.

At heart, I explore human connection – with each other, with nature, and with ourselves. I work across murals, canvas paintings, textile patterns, editorial illustration, and animation, adapting my style to different mediums while maintaining my signature energy.

Whether creating for local communities or international clients, my goal remains the same: to make art that celebrates life’s beautiful moments.

What are you currently working on?

Art is my daily practice—some pieces evolve into solidworks, while others stay personal, like pages in a visual journal. Right now, I’m balancing four private commissions and a public mural project for the City of Richmond. Every project fuels the next!
