Canadian comedian Joey Commisso has built his stand-up career on relatable observations, personal experiences, and a comedic voice shaped by some of the industry’s most influential performers. From local comedy clubs to a memorable show in Paris that helped confirm his path in stand-up, Commisso has steadily developed his craft while earning audiences across Canada and abroad.
Following the release of his comedy special, Nachosferatu, we caught up with Commisso to discuss his influences, favourite material, pre-show rituals, and the moments that have defined his career.

How would you describe your comedy style?
Accidentally funny
Who are some of your influences?
Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, Dom Irrera, Bernie Mac, Mike MacDonald, Norm MacDonald.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Eddy Murphy
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Rory Scoville
What is your pre-show ritual?
I like to play guitar or do yoga before I get ready to go to the show. Then shower time(use your imagination). Dress up and then hair. Next, kiss children, say goodbye to family.
For the last 3 years, every drive to the show starts with “Hard to Say I’m Sorry/the Getaway” and I sing it off the top of my lungs. In between I can listen to whatever, but before I get out of my car, I put on “Nobody Does It Better” by Carly Simon. I try to walk as much as I can before my set and make sure I say I love this and mean it before my name is called.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
La Pomme D’Eve, a little pub in Paris, France. Because I was far away from my comfort zone and they laughed really hard. A rugby team aggressively gave me alcohol after my set. And it was the first time I realized I can do this well…mostly.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
It’s a bit that I called the Doritos bit. It was the only bit that I sat down and wrote all the way through and never had to change any of the original ideas.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
I like to watch showcases on YouTube, and if anyone stands out to me, I will seek out more.
Tell us a joke about your city.
It’s very long and on my Album
Do you have anything to promote right now?
My comedy special that came out last year. Nachosferatu. Thank you, 604 Records. Comedy Here often.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
