Five Minutes With: Vancouver Pop/Rock Musician Richard Tichelman

Dive into the world of Richard Tichelman, a magnetic force in the pop music scene, whose journey is a dazzling blend of raw talent, passionate storytelling, and guitar strings that sing. With a career that’s a constellation of awards, accolades, and anthems, Richard has captivated audiences from the vibrant streets of Toronto to the sun-kissed stages of Los Angeles, reigning as both a headliner and a coveted supporting act that leaves fans craving more.

Fueled by a record deal with XOXO Entertainment Corp./Believe, Richard is on the brink of unveiling his debut album, “In & Out of Love,” in June 2024. The lead single “Never Be The Same”, written with Nashville auteurs Jimmy Thow (Blake Shelton, Joe Nichols, Shawn Hook) and Jamie Floyd (Ronnie Dunn, Ashley Monroe, Miranda Lambert), and produced by Ovi Bistriceanu (Mia Martina, Massari, French Montana), is a beautiful ode to that most painful of human experience, heartbreak. The album as a whole is a journey through the heart’s deepest desires and darkest shadows, this album promises to be a landmark in pop music.

Favourite musician growing up:

50 Cent and Frank Sinatra were staples in my youth.

Favourite musician now:

Mac Miller or Theo Katzman

Guilty pleasure song:

The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani

Live show ritual:

My live show ritual consists of a lot of goofy vocal warm-ups and mobility, other than that I find I spend the whole day visualizing and go quiet about 20min to 1hr before the show

Favourite local musician:

Fionn and Mother Mother – I grew up watching Fionn develop as they are a similar age to me. Talk about inspiring, these girls don’t quit and put on a killer show. I am definitely a fan.

EP or LP?

LP for sure, I’m the kind of person to put on a record and let it play from front to back

Early bird or night owl?

Recently ambidextrous… I believe the clinical term is insomniac

Road or studio?

Hands down the road has a special place in my heart, there’s just something special about seeing the world, doing what you love, and making music… Live music. The studio has a soft spot in my heart as well but for different reasons.

Any shows or albums coming up?

I’m about to release my debut album “In & Out of Love” this summer. My current single is “Never Be The Same” and I have a really fun track called “Dancing in the Kitchen” that is being released with the album. I recently got hit head-on by a car in a motorcycle incident so I’m out of commission for shows for a little bit. I love playing at Guilt & Co in Vancouver and Galaxie in White Rock. So I’ll definitely be hitting up those venues when I’m ready to play again.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

The wooden spoon is hands down my favourite spot in white rock, best way to start the day.

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

Buena Vista would have to be one of them, “Buena” meaning “Good” and “Vista” meaning “View”, that road has to be one of the best streets to cruise down on a sunset. I’m smiling just thinking about it. It definitely lives up to the name

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Crescent Park is where I spent a lot of my youth. Mostly in the pond catching frogs

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

If we’re talking in Vancouver, Guilt & Co takes the win without a shadow of a doubt

What is your favourite music store in your city?

Don’t get me wrong I love Long and McQuade but there used to be a little guitar shop two blocks from my house called Surfside Guitars. I miss that place.
