Kevin Appleby is a Vancouver-based comedian who first tested the waters of stand-up at open mics in Toronto before diving into the comedy scene in Vancouver. His passion for making people laugh took off when he started performing regularly, leading to a big career highlight, winning the Laugh Out Live comedy competition in Whistler and performing at the Whistler Conference Centre.
Known for his silly, lighthearted style, Kevin’s comedy is an entertaining blend of childhood nostalgia and playful observations. He runs a monthly show at The Black Frog and co-hosts Comedy Gems every Sunday at Underground Comedy Club. If you’re in the mood for laughs and maybe a group singalong to Nelly Furtado, his shows are the place to be.
How would you describe your comedy style?
Just silly. An amalgamation of my childhood friends.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Stanhope, Sean Rouse, Norm and Attell
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Todd Barry and my friend Jirair is pretty funny.
What is your pre-show ritual?
Pace around the back of the room. Try not to let the other comics see me cry.
What is your favourite place you have performed?
In order of who books me the most. Comedy After Dark, Underground Comedy Club, Open Space Abbotsford and Little Mountain Gallery. They are all great and a lot of fun.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
My favourite bits are always the ones no one else likes. But I do enjoy getting the crowd to sing Nelly Furtado with me.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
Going to see live comedy and word of mouth
Tell us a joke about your city.
Vancouver is cool cause it has the world’s oldest vape. The Gastown steam clock. More of an observation maybe.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I run a monthly with my friend Corbin at The Black Frog right beside the oldest vape. Last Sunday of every month. And Comedy Gems every Sunday at Underground Comedy Club with a frazzled bald kid named Liron
