Jirair Garabedian

How would you describe your comedy style?

Badly. But my friends might say goodful.

Who are some of your influences?

I don’t think I had any, but peer pressure was always behind my favourite mistakes.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Don Rickles and Louis CK…and if you promise not to publish this, Dane Cook.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Joe List. Local favourite? Ryan Williams

What is your pre-show ritual?

Wow, that is so private but I get high and hide in the woods.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Vancouver has a bunch of hidden spots for cool shows. My favourite was a friend’s balcony in False Creek. You couldn’t tell by looking, but it was surrounded by neighbours who’d yell and heckle and complain. Plus it had a great view of downtown Vancouver and when news choppers would fly by, you could reliably get laughs talking about the Apache helicopters finally coming to take you out.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I used to talk about how I look like both the IDF and Hamas because I find it fun to toy with the audience’s emotions.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Usually, I’ll find someone on a podcast and if I like them there, then chances are I’ll be into their stand-up. There’s also a medium for listening and talking to dead comics, but she charges a lot and I’m pretty sure just makes things up.

Tell us a joke about your city.

We have shadows-cast-by-buildings laws preventing us from creating more housing. It’s funny in a way that makes you sad and not laugh.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

Yeah – if anyone is hiring, I’m looking for a job where I don’t have to show up or work. Also, I’m hiring an intern to make videos and chew my food. Let me know if this sounds like you.

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

Eddy Spencer, Emily Qureshi, E.T. Starchild
