Vancouver-based comedian Liron Amdour first took the stage at a Pro/Am show at Lana Lou’s in 2021, where an encouraging crowd helped solidify his love for stand-up. Since then, he has immersed himself in the comedy scene, performing regularly and producing his own Pro/Am show at Underground Comedy Club. With a style that blends farcical humour, absurd premises, and the occasional deadpan delivery, Liron keeps audiences on their toes with unexpected punchlines.
How would you describe your comedy style?
I would describe my comedy style as farcical and silly, and on some occasions deadpan. Sometimes I share anecdotes about my life with the rest of my material, having amusing and ridiculous premises and unexpected punchlines.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
My favourite comedian growing up was Don Rickles! I first saw him on The Late Show with David Letterman and have spent countless hours on YouTube as a teenager watching his appearances on various talk shows throughout his life.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Currently, my favourite comedian is Norm Macdonald. I also first saw him on The Late Show with David Letterman and fell in love with his work thereafter.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I always write the jokes I plan on saying on stage down on paper over and over again until I do not doubt that I will get their order right. Once I memorize the order, it’s always fun to talk with other comics in the green room to pass the time as I wait for my turn on stage.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
My favourite place to have performed was in the back of Dakoda’s Bar for Kelowna Comedy. It wasn’t necessarily because of the venue itself, but because it was my first time performing outside of the Metro Vancouver area, and I was flown out to do the spot, which felt really special. The pressure to do well was also incredibly high, and because my performance went really well, the feeling of relief, joy, and achievement afterwards was incredibly satisfying.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
My favourite bit I wrote so far is how I realised that it’s much cheaper to see touring comedians perform if they have been cancelled, and then exclusively watching live stand-up from comics who have been cancelled to save money. I am proud of it because, for the most part, the way I first wrote it down is the way I say it now. Other than a few minor alterations, the joke remains unchanged, which is unusual for most stand-up comics, myself included, and the fact this bit consistently does well is the cherry on top.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
My favourite medium for finding new comics is through podcasts! I listen to four different podcasts every week, and I discovered many of the comedians I currently enjoy through these podcasts!
Tell us a joke about your city.
I would tell this joke around the time of the 2022 municipal election.
“I don’t know who you guys are voting for in the city elections, but I voted for Rollergirl. A 54-year-old woman who travels around Vancouver on rollerblades. She also pleaded guilty for beating a 64-year-old man to death and served 10 years in prison for it, so…I think I made the right choice.”
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I run a fun Pro/Am show at Underground Comedy Club with my fellow comedian and friend Kevin Appleby! Join us every Sunday at 9 pm at 120 West Hastings Street. Tickets are only $5! I book the first five comics who are either pros in the city or are up and coming. Afterwards, there is a bucket round for which anyone can sign up for and compete in an amazing (and usually chaotic) night of laughter, with first place getting a 5-minute spot on the following show.
I also have a YouTube channel where I post funny skits.
Where can we follow you?
All information about shows I am on is posted on my Instagram. My YouTube channel, full of funny videos, can be found here.
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
Matt Atkins is someone who is incredibly funny and works hard in the scene. I definitely see him making a career from stand-up in the future.
