“A Day in the Life” with: Vancouver Circus Artist Yuki Ueda

Yuki Ueda has been a pillar of the Vancouver performing arts community for over a decade. An artist who sees the connections between disciplines, he has consistently worked to bring together performers from across the circus, dance, theatre and music communities by producing events that break through the boundaries that typically separate performers.

Since its inception, and throughout its run of 10 years, Yuki was a member of the board and co-producer of Madskillz – a ground-level circus festival featuring workshops, open jams, and multiple shows.

He is co-founder of Cause & Effect Circus – a local company that produces narrative shows using contemporary juggling, dance and physical theatre. They created a hit show, “The New Conformity”, which won the Director’s Choice award at the Vancouver Fringe festival in 2015.

He is a beloved coach at CircusWest, inspiring a new generation of juggling artists through joy and infectious passion for his craft; joy and passion that speak through every performance and interaction.

Which ’hood are you in?

In the Collingwood/Renfrew area. Been around for 10 years and love the neighbourhood.

What do you do?

I juggle for a living. I juggle family life, circus artist advancement/upkeep, entertainment production, business administration, coaching the next generation, organizing/gathering circus misfits and literally 7 balls in the air.

What are you currently working on?

Currently, I have three major projects on the go. The main focus right now is the show Luminarium by my circus collective, Cause & Effect Circus, which will debut at the Vancouver International Children’s Festival at the end of the month. The second project is to blend Traditional Japanese Artform, Edo Daikagura, into my repertoire of shows. And a new circus project “Circus 199”, a group of 5 circus enthusiasts that are on average 40 years old, creating and working on a new circus show “Jukebox”(working title) that is planned for the end of the year/early 2026.

Where can we find your work?

The best spot is to head to my websites — causeeffectcircus.ca and/or yukithejuggler.com — and find your favourite social media icon to connect with us for future projects.
