Michael Gorenstein founded YUM Sweet Shop as part of his lifelong quest to find the perfect scoop of ice cream. His obsession led him to open a modern candy and ice cream shop on Main Street. Now, nearly every scoop of ice cream YUM sells is created using Gorenstein’s own recipes. In addition to ice cream, YUM also sources a selection of candy from around the world. We spoke with Gorenstein to learn more.

What is your business called and what does it do?
We go by YUM SWEET SHOP, but many just call us YUM. We make and bake delicious ice cream, pastry, cookies and treats of all kinds. We also have over 200 different candies and sweets from around the globe.
What made you want to do this work?
I am a candy and ice cream lover, but the most rewarding part of my day are the amazing people I meet. Kids of all ages, lovers of all things sweet, and our community is diverse, loyal and super cool!
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
Too many problems to list them all. We have faced Covid, labour costs continuing to rise annually, inflation and raw material costs. Poor economy and spending habits changing. Small business is a 24/7 job. It’s not if a problem will arise, but when! Being an entrepreneur means never quitting in spite of what the world throws at you.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
We have been lucky enough to grow up with our customers. We have seen kids graduate and go off to university, and empty nesters coming for their regular weekly treat. We have broad appeal. You just need to love yummy treats and want the YUM experience.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We have several revenue streams. First and foremost is our brick and mortar location at 4150 Main Street, but we also do tons of corporate and private label. You need as many revenue streams as possible to survive today.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
4150 Main St is where you will find me.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
Best question would be why should we come here and not a competitor? The best answer is, firstly, our product is the best out there (our ice cream and treats are next level), but more than that is to experience what we do. We have an incredibly high standard of service. The YUM EXPERIENCE is the gold standard.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
Best part is the people I meet, both my staff and guests. There is no worst part.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
People always see me (former bodybuilder), and they ask if they eat ice cream, can they look like me … I always say no 😜
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
