Mint Cleaning was started out of a need for a healthy alternative. Co-founders Robyn Mair and Monika Scott were running a cleaning business when the toxic ingredients in conventional cleaners began to cause health problems for them both. They decided to create a safer, plant-based cleaning line. What began with products being sold on social media is now a multi-million-dollar Canadian brand. We spoke with Robyn to learn more about Mint Cleaning.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Our company is Mint Cleaning, and we create eco-friendly cleaning and home care products. We started as professional cleaners and, after experiencing health issues from toxic chemicals, formulated our own line of safe and effective products. Now, we sell across Canada through our online store, retail partners, and commercial programs.
What made you want to do this work?
It started out of necessity. My business partner, Monika, and I met in a mom group and started a cleaning business for flexible work. But after years of exposure to harsh chemicals, we both developed health issues. We wanted safer alternatives that actually worked—so we made them ourselves! That’s how Mint Cleaning was born.
What problem did you want to solve with your business?
The problem started when we were running our cleaning business and experiencing the negative effects of using harsh cleaning chemicals—headaches, skin irritation, breathing issues, you name it. We wanted a safer alternative, not just for ourselves but also for our staff, so we started making our own plant-based cleaning products.
At first, it was just for personal use, but when we shared these products on social media, the response was incredible. People wanted to buy them, and things took off faster than we ever expected. It snowballed from mixing small batches in our kitchens to scaling into a full-fledged business. Now, we’re a multimillion-dollar brand with products in over 250 stores across Canada and a thriving online community. It all started with a simple mission—to create cleaning products that are safe, effective, and smell amazing—and it’s been a wild ride ever since!
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Our customers are primarily women aged 30-60 who care about their health, home design, and keeping a beautiful, clean space. Many are moms who want safe products for their families, and they appreciate high-quality, well-designed essentials that fit their lifestyle.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We sell directly to customers through our online store, partner with retailers across Canada, and supply commercial properties like hotels and resorts. We also have a flagship retail store where people can see how our products are made.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
We have a store locator on our website with all of our retail partners, as well, our flagship store is located in Ucluelet BC.
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
“What makes your company different?”
Mint Cleaning is more than just a cleaning product brand; we’re a thriving online community. We don’t just sell products; we share cleaning tips, DIY recipes, and entertaining reels that make cleaning fun. We take our customers along for the ride, sharing both our wins and our challenges as we grow this business.
Our community is at the heart of everything we do. We genuinely engage with our customers, answer their questions, and take their feedback seriously. That’s why our products are so loved, because they’ve been tested and refined with real input from real people.
On top of that, our products are developed by professional cleaners, so they actually work. We use pure essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances, and we’re obsessed with making products that are beautiful, refillable, and effective.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is hearing from customers who love our products and seeing the community we’ve built. There’s nothing better than knowing we’re making a real impact in people’s homes. The worst part? Dealing with logistics—supply chain issues, packaging shortages, and the never-ending game of keeping up with demand!
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
Hmmm well, when you start your business for flexible hours, but you end up working 24 / 7….
