East Van Jam was founded in East Vancouver by Natalie Ferrari-Morton in 2013. Ferrari-Morton harnessed the spirit of her neighbourhood and funnelled it into her locally-made, small-batch, low-sugar jams. Since its inception, East Van Jam has supported local, family-owned farms and businesses with the goal of not only making delicious jam but also nurturing the environment and empowering local communities. We spoke with co-owners Nicole and Michelle to learn more.

What is your business called and what does it do?
Our business is called East Van Jam, and we produce low-sugar jam using only BC sourced fruit. Alongside our jams, we also have East Van Boxes, which are thoughtfully curated gift boxes featuring locally sourced goods from Canadian makers.
What made you want to do this work?
We do this work because we believe in supporting local. What drew us here was the opportunity to work with BC farmers, keep production close to home and be part of a more resilient food system.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
The problem we aim to solve with East Van Jam is supporting local agriculture and strengthening our food system, while also offering a low-sugar alternative to those people who are looking to reduce sugar, without compromising on taste.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
East Van Jam appeals to a wide demographic, from health-conscious consumers to everyday shoppers seeking quality, locally made products. More love, less sugar!
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We generate revenue through the sale of our jam and gift boxes.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
What we love most is connecting directly with our customers and building relationships with other small business vendors, particularly during the holiday markets. The toughest part is juggling so many roles at once. It’s all fun and games until you’re hand-sticking labels on 1,000 jars of jam. 🙂
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
Small business owner: spreading ourselves a little thin … and also jam. 🙂
