Strategies Games & Hobbies is your one-stop shop for all things games whether you are new to gaming or an experienced gamer looking to add to your collection. With everything from board games to role-playing games, Darren Bolton will help you find exactly what you are looking for. We caught up with him to learn more.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Strategies Games & Hobbies. We sell board games, model-based games and role-playing games. We also host game events.
What made you want to do this work?
I love games and want others to get the enjoyment out of them, that I do. A shop full of games is a fun place to be.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I wanted to make a game store that was accessible to everyone. When you come into the shop, I want you to feel welcome and that this is a space for you. It’s a place for people to be introduced to games for the first time, and where experienced gamers can find the latest game or complete their collection.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
We have a very broad range of customers—all ages, from 5 to 105. We have customers who come in every week and those who make us a destination on their trips. We also supply schools and libraries.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We provide the best selection of games in the Lower Mainland. You can see the product in person, and we will answer any questions you have about games. We also sell online through our website.
What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.
If you ask us what game you should buy, we’ll do our best to tailor our recommendations to you. This means we will ask you questions in return, such as: What are you playing currently? What do you like about it? How many people do you want to play it with? The best question is the one that sparks conversation and helps you find a game you enjoy.
What is the best part about what you do?
I get to meet other people who are enthusiastic about games. Games provide a social connection—when we provide a customer with a game, we know that they are excited to take it home and play it with friends and family.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
Sometimes people who play games are thought of as anti-social but it’s exactly the opposite. Playing a game means spending time with someone else! Also… Why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the games store!
