Homegrown Business: Jason Morehouse of HiBoop

Jason Morehouse, Founder and CEO of HiBoop, is on a mission to revolutionize mental health care accessibility in Canada. Drawing from his own experiences, Morehouse developed HiBoop—an online platform that streamlines mental health assessments for both individuals and healthcare providers. With a user-friendly interface and a science-backed approach, HiBoop aims to speed up diagnoses and bridge gaps in the overburdened healthcare system.

HiBoop

What is your business called and what does it do?

HiBoop is an online platform and assessment tool designed to address Canada’s mental health crisis. It combines decades of research and scientifically-backed assessments into a single, easy-to-use interface, giving both individuals and care providers a comprehensive view of their mental health.

HiBoop aims to increase accessibility to timely mental health care by offering preliminary evaluations and forming a pathway to quicker diagnosis through measurement-based care. Our goal is to make mental health assessments available to everyone, regardless of location or financial barriers.

By equipping individuals with valuable insights and tools, HiBoop empowers Canadians to validate their mental health experiences, advocate for their care, and access resources and treatment plans faster.

What made you want to do this work?

HiBoop was born out of my personal journey with mental health. After years of feeling like something was off, I decided to prioritize my own mental wellness and sought a specialized treatment facility to get some answers. When I finally received my diagnosis, it was a moment of validation and clarity that helped me make sense of my experiences.

The truth is, getting those answers wasn’t easy. This transformative experience equipped me with tools to manage my symptoms, but also highlighted how inaccessible and costly mental health care remains for many. I wanted to build something that would empower others to gain insight into their mental health and advocate for the support they need.

Everyone at HiBoop is united by personal connections to mental health and a shared passion for creating accessible solutions to the widespread mental health crisis.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

In British Columbia, a standard family doctor visit lasts just 10 minutes. Pair that with assessments that include hundreds of questions, and the process to get a holistic mental health diagnosis becomes painfully slow. With Canada’s ongoing family doctor shortage and the global need for 6.4 million physicians to meet universal healthcare goals, it’s clear: the system is not working fast enough for those who need it most.

With HiBoop, we are supporting healthcare providers by offering a way to get a preliminary evaluation that can be completed from anywhere, allowing patients to advocate for their care and forming a pathway to quicker diagnosis through measurement-based care.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

While our clientele spans a wide range, we are primarily focused on two groups: clinicians and individuals navigating their mental health journey. On one side, we work with healthcare providers like clinics, treatment centres, and mental health professionals who need tools to simplify and speed up the assessment process. These are people on the frontlines of care who are often stretched thin, but deeply committed to helping patients.

As we expand our services, we aim to introduce assessments for individual use. People can complete the assessment and bring it to their healthcare provider for a formal evaluation. If needed, they can then receive a diagnosis and begin a treatment plan.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

HiBoop is designed to scale through a flexible subscription model and per-patient pricing, globally. Care providers can choose between annual contracts or a pay-as-you-go model, where they pay a one-time standard rate per patient for the initial assessment—after which ongoing care remains accessible at no extra cost.

We offer flexible pricing options for smaller clinics and annual plans for larger institutions. Additionally, we are committed to supporting non-profits and charities by offering purpose-based discounted rates as we grow.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

Victoria, BC

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

Question: How does HiBoop compare to other mental health assessment platforms?

Answer: HiBoop was built to create a better experience for both patients and clinicians. Unlike other platforms that rely on lengthy, standardized assessments, HiBoop uses an intelligent algorithm that adapts in real-time, asking only the most relevant questions. This reduces redundancy and fatigue, making the process faster and more engaging while maintaining clinical accuracy. For providers, this means better data and clearer insights without extra admin work. More than just an assessment tool, HiBoop is designed to improve patient engagement and create a smoother path to appropriate care.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

Best part: Seeing the excitement from clinics in our pilot program and how engaged their patients are. Clinicians tell us HiBoop is making assessments easier and more insightful, while patients appreciate an experience that feels more personal and less overwhelming. The best part is knowing we’re building something that truly helps, and being able to implement feedback quickly to make it even better.

Worst part: The slow pace of change in healthcare. Even with clear benefits, getting clinics to adopt new tools takes time, and larger systems move even slower. But seeing how quickly our pilot clinics have embraced HiBoop gives us confidence that we’re on the right track.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

It’s hard to joke about mental health when the stakes are so high, but sometimes humour is how we cope. So here’s a self-reflective one:

“Knock knock.”

“Who’s there?”

“Nobody—you’re knocking on a mirror, not a door.”

It’s a little dark, a little introspective—kind of like the process of confronting your mental health. But the good news is, once you see yourself clearly, you can start moving forward.

Where can we follow you?

Clinicians and anyone interested in mental health innovation can connect with us at hiboop.com or on LinkedIn.

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

There are so many great local businesses to choose from, but today, I’d highlight KWENCH. Our office is in this amazing shared coworking space, where we get to connect with members of Victoria’s tech community and beyond. It has been a welcoming first home for us, offering not just great amenities but also inclusive events that bring people together. We’re grateful to be part of such a vibrant and supportive space.
