Homegrown Business: Durriya Rehan of Fine Finds

Fine Finds is a chic boutique in Yaletown with a thoughtfully curated collection of clothes, accessories, jewelry, and gifts. Showcasing female designers, as well as Canadian-made goods, Fine Finds has a romantic and whimsical aesthetic. Think dreamy, floral dresses or stylish, pointed-toe flats by Billini. What is your business called and what does it do?

Fine Finds Boutique. It’s in the name! We are your one-stop shop for everything fashion and gift-giving.

What made you want to do this work?

My love for femininity and everything pretty! My passion for fashion and gift-giving, along with bringing the community closer, is the main force that keeps me running.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

I am very passionate about women’s empowerment and Canadian-made products. I can easily source cheaper brands from the US or overseas, but I want to promote as much local and Canadian merchandise as possible. I really want to help local designers and makers to showcase and build their businesses.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Women of all ages and styles who want to shine bright and look different, all the people who want to give and receive well-put-together, curated gifts instead of coffee shop gift cards.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

Fine Finds Boutique is a retail store, and we generate income by selling merchandise. We also have an online store.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

We are located in the heart of Yaletown at 1014 Mainland Street. Fine Finds boutique is one of the oldest businesses in Yaletown.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

“Everything is so unique! Where do you source your merchandise from?”

I really enjoy this question and love explaining the whole sourcing and buying process, because in that way, I can also educate customers about being local and sustainable. I try to source as much Canadian as possible. Jewelry is a big department in my store, and all our jewelry is made by local designers right here in Vancouver. Candles, bath and body, skin care, gifts are 95% Canadian-made. Fashion-wise wise I carry Canadian brands and fill the gap with few European brands.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

Best part is showcasing and supporting other small businesses. I feel proud as I made all these things. My favourite part is when customers come back all dressed up, head to toe in Fine Finds, and tell me that they got so many compliments! It literally makes my heart full of joy.

Running a small business seems very easy, but it is not. The worst part is maintaining the cash flow and competing with big-box stores.

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

I wish I could mention every small business! My two favourite businesses in Yaletown are the “Brix & Mortar” restaurant and “West of Woodward”, another lovely boutique in Yaletown.
