“A Day in the Life” with: Vancouver Artist Layla Verreault

At just 13 years old, Layla Verreault is already making a name for herself as a performing artist across multiple disciplines—acting, singing, music and dance. With credits in two Hallmark movies (Scouting for Christmas and an upcoming 2025 release) and a national commercial for CDW and HP, she’s quickly establishing herself as one to watch.

Layla trains at Vancouver Performing Stars (VPS), where she studies voice, dance and musical theatre. She’s played lead roles in Nutcracker: The Musical (Clara), The Little Mermaid (Ursula), Oz (Glinda), and most recently starred as Alice in Alice in Wonderland for the Dreams Musical Theatre Company’s year-end production.

A gold-medal-winning Ukrainian dancer, Layla also takes classes for ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary. Her musical abilities extend to piano, guitar, songwriting and choral singing—she performs with both her school and VPS choirs. In 2022, she released her first original EP, By the Seaside.

Layla is a student in the advanced program at Vancouver Young Actors School and is praised for her confidence, comedic timing and professionalism beyond her years. Whether on stage or on set, Layla feels right at home—and with her dedication and talent, it’s clear her star is only beginning to rise.

From early morning rehearsals to late-night recording sessions, Layla’s daily routine reflects the passion and discipline behind her growing success. Here’s a glimpse into a day in the life of this multi-talented young performer.

Layla’s cultural heritage is super important to her, and she is the fourth generation in her family to study and perform Ukrainian folk dance.
Layla plays guitar more often than piano, but tends to prefer the piano when she’s songwriting. She likes to process her feelings by expressing herself through songs.
Layla starred as Clara in the VPS holiday production of Nutcracker: The Musical.
Because Layla is so young and always growing, she gets her acting headshots redone frequently.
Layla loves watching and supporting local theatre and attends as many shows as possible with her theatre buddies. She recently attended CTORA’s production of West Side Story and loved it!

Which ’hood are you in?

I live in Yaletown, close to the water, which I never take for granted. I feel lucky that I can walk the Seawall or take an Aquabus to my acting and theatre classes in Mount Pleasant. I love living downtown in the centre of everything and having easy access to live theatre, music and sports events!

What do you do?

I’m a student, obviously because I’m still school-aged, but my professional acting work has included TV commercials and movies of the week, as well as musical theatre. Theatre is my life, and I love singing along to musical soundtracks like Beetlejuice, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Wicked and more! I also spend a lot of time auditioning, taking music and dance classes, strumming my guitar and songwriting.

What are you currently working on?

Well, I’m constantly auditioning (lots of things coming up that I can’t talk about yet!), and I’m super excited to be taking part in the Arts Club Theatre’s Summer Intensive this year.

Where can we find your work?

My film and TV work is on IMDB, and I like to post a lot of my daily life and songwriting on Instagram.
