Ed Hill is a Vancouver-based comedian, born in Taiwan. In 2021, Ed became the first comedian of Taiwanese-Canadian descent to release a full one-hour comedy special titled “Candy & Smiley” with Comedy Dynamics. The special was named “Top 15 Comedy Specials of 2021” by Paste Magazine and “Best of 2021” by NPR Radio. The special is currently streaming worldwide on Amazon Prime and Apple TV. We had the chance to catch up with him to find out more about his influences and style.
How would you describe your comedy style?
Introspective and personal. I am not a political or blue comic. I only know how to talk about myself and my experiences. That’s either super profound or extremely egotistical.
Who are some of your influences?
My family and the little moments in life. My dad always taught me that the most valuable thing someone can give you is your time, and it is in those moments of time that you find the true meaning of life.

Who is your favourite comedian now?
Drew Michael.
What is your pre-show ritual?
Stay thankful, because as a performer there are always shows that are not as well attended as expected, and it’s easy to be resentful and bitter. I’ve come to realize that what I am doing (telling jokes on stage professionally) is something absolutely unheard of in many parts of the world. Besides, I can barely get 5 people in my family to listen to me, let alone pay for it.
I’ve also been going to the gym because I don’t want diabetes.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
In front of my friends and family as part of my first Amazon Prime special. It was truly a memorable moment to be with people who have shared moments with me. We may have filmed it inside a giant gymnasium due to the pandemic, but the connections were closer than ever.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I currently have a bit about how it’s truly a blessing to be loved, and how hate is not an emotion, but a choice. It is also a very difficult choice. I’m proud because I really like it. I might hate it one day but again, that’s a choice.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
My iPhone. Typically via apple car play in the car so I don’t lose my mind being stuck in traffic.

It’s super affordable. So cheap.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I will be performing at Yuk Yuk’s Comedy Club Toronto on Friday, Dec 2nd at 10:30 PM as part of The Melting Pot Comedy show that highlights multiculturalism.
