Charitable Choices: Mika Torres of Burnaby Neighbourhood House

Burnaby Neighbourhood House is a community hub dedicated to reducing social isolation and creating an inclusive space where everyone belongs. We spoke with Executive Director Mika Torres about BNH’s people-first approach, the importance of community support, and how neighbours can get involved to help strengthen Burnaby’s social fabric.

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

Burnaby Neighbourhood House (BNH) is a community-driven organization that offers programs and services to support the needs of our community. It provides a warm, welcoming space where people of all ages and backgrounds can connect, engage, and belong. BNH is committed to making sure everyone has access to the opportunities and support they need to thrive.

What problem does it aim to solve?

Burnaby Neighbourhood House (BNH) aims to address social isolation, reduce barriers to services, and create an inclusive, connected community where people can connect, engage, and belong.

When did you start/join it?

October 14, 2025.

What made you want to get involved?

I have always been passionate about working with people and making a difference. What really drew me to Burnaby Neighbourhood House (BNH) is how inclusive it is to everyone in the community. I love being a part of something that is actively working to bring people together and create positive change. I want to help make the difference, and BNH feels like the perfect place to do that.

What was the situation like when you started?

I have been in my role for a little over a month. At this stage, I am taking the time to learn and understand the Neighbourhood House way.

What more needs to be done?

Not everything we do is fully funded. Advocacy and community support are essential in keeping BNH running. BNH’s volunteers and our community are what bring BNH to life.

The Society to End Homelessness. The Society works to support individuals experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness in Burnaby. Services they offer include outreach resource centres, mobile shower program, Burnaby Neighbourhood Pantry, and Extreme Weather Response.
