The Richmond Therapeutic Riding Association

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

The Richmond Therapeutic Riding Association (RTRA) provides therapeutic riding lessons to children and youth with disabilities to promote physical, social, and psychological well-being.

What problem does it aim to solve?

RTRA creates an environment that helps children and youth with disabilities achieve their full developmental potential, combining therapy with fun activities.

When did you start/join it?

The program has been operating in Richmond for over 30 years.

What made you want to get involved?

Seeing the positive impact of lessons on riders, their families, and volunteers inspired me to get involved. It’s amazing to witness the progress riders make during lessons and how it carries into their everyday lives.

What was the situation like when you started?

There has always been a need for this type of program for children and youth. Our waitlist keeps growing as more people recognize the benefits of therapeutic riding.

How can our readers help?

RTRA is always looking for more volunteers to support our programs. Each lesson requires up to six volunteers, and recruiting can be a challenge. Donations are also essential to keep the program running.

Do you have any events coming up?

Yes! We have an online 50/50 raffle running until December 19. This annual fundraiser is crucial for us.
