Five Minutes With: Vancouver Hip Hop Artist Kapok

Kapok is the embodiment of the modern musical spectrum, seamlessly blending Jazzy Hiphop vibes, R&B, and new school rap into a genre-defying experience. Whether commanding the stage solo or harmonizing with his live band, he delivers a panoramic range of emotions and narratives that captivate audiences from the first beat drop.

Hailing from the vibrant Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, Kapok’s upbringing by a single mother amidst the cultural crossroads of Mayan and Welsh heritage imbues his music with depth and authenticity. Rooted in the West Coast ethos yet resonating globally, Kapok’s collaborations with legendary acts like De La Soul, T3, Abstract Rude, Moka Only and Redman alongside his longtime companions The Potatohead People underscore his impact on the contemporary music scene.

For fans craving lyrical substance and a fresh perspective on the rap game, Kapok transcends clichés, offering a compelling glimpse into the future of hip-hop innovation.

Favourite musician growing up:

Probably the group The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest or Guru of Jazzmatazz

Favourite musician now:

That’s pretty hard, of the newer era it’s probably Anderson Paak but I’m a huge fan of quite a few, right now I’m mostly listening to Dabuell, Kaytranada and Kehlani

Guilty pleasure song:

Lol, I dunno probably Eminem’s new song ‘Houdini’

Live show ritual:

Self-care day! Brand new white socks. Sushi for dinner and usually some dark chocolate in my system. HYDRATION

Favourite local musician:

I have sooooo many but always been a huge fan of David Morin. Johnny Tobin is a beast! NADUH been killing it and the homies Potatohead People obvy!

EP or LP?

Imma have to say LP all the way as I just miss listening to full albums with skits and all that. Something about getting fully immersed in an artist’s world that is hard to achieve with an EP

Early bird or night owl?

I stay up way too late more often than not but since I’ve started some morning workout rituals I’m slowly transitioning to that lifestyle.

Road or studio?

I love performing so much and the memories that I’ve made over the years on the road with my best friends are unmatched. Something to be said about tapping into the zone and forgetting that time exists in the studio though.

Any shows or albums coming up?

Upcoming appearances at Bastids BBQ Vancouver. I’m constantly releasing singles, the last one titled ‘Who Dat?’ with Buggatti Beatz is now available on all the streaming platforms.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

Damn, Got to be Bodega for tapas, Pho Goodness for Vietnamese, and Sushi Kaido for Japanese, I am at these places constantly lol I also love Budgies but mostly cooking at home for that good good.

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

I love Union Street as that’s where I grew up. I feel like that community is the main character in the story of Vancouver. I also think Commercial Drive has really held on to a lot of its character through our rapidly expanding and changing city. Hastings* because it shows how much people in positions of power care so little about the blatant drug and mental health issues afflicting this city,

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

I’m always at Mount Pleasant Park. Skatepark, Basketball courts, places to BBQ, trees to set up the hammock, great dog watching and just overall good vibes there, It’s so chill, my son loves it.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

I wish the sound was better at Hollywood Theatre because I would probably say them, such a great space and aesthetic in there. Every show I’ve ever been to at the Birdhouse has been lit love that indoor/outdoor appeal.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

BEATSTREET. And bless Long & Mcquade for always letting me walk out the door with 1000’s of dollars worth of equipment with little to no down payments lol, angelic beings.
