Five Minutes With: Vancouver Musician Atlin Morgan

Vancouver-born Atlin Morgan has become known for captivating audiences with her warm and expressive vocals and powerful songwriting. A trained classical singer with diverse musical influences ranging from Beethoven to Björk to Ella Fitzgerald, Atlin’s music defies conventional genres and draws you in with its moody and moving storytelling.

Although mainly known as a keyboardist, Atlin recently discovered a passion for acoustic guitar, which has brought out a whole new style of music and introduced contrast to her piano-based songwriting. She is currently collaborating with many talented local musicians, playing shows solo, in duos and supporting other local bands with keys and vocals. She is heavily involved in the local music scene, doing what she can to strengthen and support the community that has given her so much joy since joining it. She is currently promoting her 2024 debut album, Lady Grey, while also recording her next album.

I actually just released a single I wrote called Come to Me, Darlin’ with my folk trio, Ask The Wind, with Daniel Sinclair on acoustic guitar and vocals and Maya Eliza on fiddle. They are both incredible musicians, and it was such a treat playing with them. We’re not currently active as a trio, but Daniel and I are still playing occasionally as a duo.

Favourite musician growing up:

Radiohead, Björk and Ella Fitzgerald

Favourite musician now:

Still Radiohead, but also many local musicians/friends. Such an unbelievable music talent pool in Vancouver right now.

Guilty pleasure song:

Take My Breath Away by Belinda Carlisle.

Live show ritual:

Have a light meal, then try to find some quiet time. I like to still my mind and avoid socialising before a show if I can help it to help me focus.

Favourite local musician:

I’ll have to list a couple: Dan Mangan, Kate Yahn, and so many of my friends in the Vancouver music community, but there are honestly too many to list and I’d be afraid to miss one.

EP or LP?

LP for sure. I love when an LP is thoughtfully put together and has the time to really tell a story, so when I decided to create my own, I kept this in mind and carefully chose the songs and the order in a way that told a story and flowed and felt like you were experiencing a journey, not just a random playlist. I wrote, recorded and mixed my debut album myself in my small childhood home, and despite the challenging production atmosphere, I persevered and was proud of the end result, and that has become part of the story of the album.

Early bird or night owl?

Both! I don’t get enough sleep! I’m always too busy making music.

Road or studio?

I think they are so different but equally important and enjoyable. I love the process of recording and mixing and creating beautiful music to share, but I don’t want to just send it out in the streaming universe- I want to be on stage playing it everywhere I can and connecting with my fans in person.

Any shows or albums coming up?

I have a few singles coming out in the next three months, so people can stay tuned, including one with one of my favourite local musicians, Elliot Paul. I’m also working on my second album, but no release date yet.
