Tragedy Plus Time: Vancouver-based Comedian Jeren Drew

Jeren Drew is not only funny but also a great dancer. Growing up in Montreal in a Filipino household he often uses his background and upbringing as material to generate infectious laughter during his performances. Raised in Montreal and now residing in Vancouver he has brought his talent to the West Coast. If you are lucky enough to catch him in action you will not regret it. We spoke with Jeren to find out more.

How would you describe your comedy style?

I cannot describe my style as you’ll have to experience it first-hand…but you’ll get a bit of those mentioned above…

Who are some of your influences?

My comedy style is heavily inspired by Kevin Hart’s charisma in grown little man and Dave Chapelle’s cadence in killing me softly …of course Jo Koy’s message on FAMILY.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

It’s a mix of new chapelle and old chapelle. Kevin Hart, Jo Koy and Bobby Lee and EDDIE GRIFFITH would be my Mount Rushmore.

What is your pre-show ritual?

My pre-show ritual is definitely listening to Chris Brown and getting my “swag, mojo, sauce, fire etc” on.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

My favourite venue I have performed is upstairs at House of Comedy in New West, because it was the first place I was physically and said I would sell this place out and did it 3 times not on my own but with HELP but it came to fruition.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

My favourite bit I have written is about my father barging into my room while I had headphones in listening to Chris Brown dancing thinking I was jacking off playing with my penis. I’m proud of it because there are so many layers to that bit and it’s authentic…

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

My median to finding new artists is if I can see myself in the artist and the energy, vibe attracts tribe period.

Tell us a joke about your city.

A JOKE ABOUT MONTREAL ISSSSSSSSSS Montreal French is the redneck of the language of love TABARNAK!

Do you have any upcoming events?

August 17th at 7 pm – One Beat on The Portside Pub, 7 Alexander Street, Vancouver, V6a 1E9
