Tragedy Plus Time: Vancouver Comedian Trevor Jang

Trevor Jang is a Vancouver-based Comedian who became charmed with the realm of comedy starting with Russell Peters on YouTube. He describes his comedic style as a mix of cultural identity, dark humour and social commentary — weaving his storytelling with personal experiences, honouring his Chinese/Indigenous heritage.

Trevor Jang

How would you describe your comedy style?

My style is sharp and introspective, blending cultural identity, dark humour and some social commentary. I weave storytelling and personal experiences—my mixed Chinese/ Indigenous heritage, addiction recovery, and family history—into punchy, well-crafted jokes. My humour is both self-deprecating and confrontational, tackling racial stereotypes and personal struggles with a mix of wit and vulnerability.

Who are some of your influences?

Lizzie Allan. I got my start in comedy through her Hilarapy program, bringing hope through humour to those impacted by addiction. She taught me to show up authentically, own my story, shed the shame and laugh through it all. I owe a lot to Lizzie. Keith Nahanee is another one. He founded Rez Comedy which got my foot in the door at some of the comedy clubs. A trailblazer for sure.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Russell Peters blew up when I was in grade 7 or 8, I think. I didn’t watch much stand-up before his special went viral on YouTube. That was the first time I remember watching comedy and having that “woah” moment. This is really funny.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

I have a bunch. Ronny Chieng. Nimesh Patel. Josh Johnson. Dave Chappelle. Locally, my favourites in Vancouver are Robert Peng and Amar Singh.

What is your pre-show ritual?

Coffee on the way to the venue blasting Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar or the Snotty Nose Rez Kids. Then a Bubly or non-alcoholic beer before my set.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

The Roundhouse in Yaletown. The boujee vibes.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

I have a bit about the protests that went on in my hometown of Richmond in 2024 when the city was considering a safe drug consumption site. I actually went to the protests to observe and heard some of the most ridiculously misinformed and hilarious statements about addiction and what a safe drug consumption site is and is not. I just couldn’t help but roast them ever since. I’m proud of it because it fights stigma in a way that still puts funny first.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

YouTube or TikTok mostly. I’m starting to get into comedy albums on Apple Music now.

Tell us a joke about your city.

“Vancouver is the only city I know of where people care more about the gluten in their pizza than fentanyl in their cocaine.” This isn’t my joke, it’s from Mark Hughes, but it’s my favourite joke about Vancouver. Gets me every time.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

A mini-movie (3 minutes) I put together about my addiction recovery and journey into comedy.

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
