Talitha Koum Society (TK) is a 12-step-based non-profit organization that aims to empower women with addictions to lead healthy and fulfilling lives by providing a home, a nurturing community, rich faith, 12-step programming, and life-skills training. We caught up with Odo Nkum, Executive Director, to learn more about what they do.
Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.
Talitha Koum Society is a spiritually rich 12-step-based non-profit organization that shows unconditional love by loving our clients back to living.
What problem does it aim to solve?
We aim at empowering women with addictions to lead healthy and fulfilling lives by providing a home, a nurturing community, rich faith, 12-step programming, and life-skills training.
When did you start/join it?
TK has been in existence since 2001 and I joined the society in 2019.
What made you want to get involved?
I felt ‘called’ to be a part of this awesome work and to exhibit love to the women and children who are not always accepted in the community due to their addiction cycle.
What was the situation like when you started?
Documentation was primarily done by pen and paper.
How has it changed since?
All our documentation has been computerized and logs are done via computers. Thanks to generous donors who finance this project. There has been an increase in the number of clients graduating from the program and there has been longer stay recorded.
What more needs to be done?
The cost of the program per person is $93 per day and we only get $35.90 per diem (that’s if the person is on income assistance. There are some who come in and don’t qualify for income assistance. TK doesn’t send them out).
We need solid funding so that we are not limited to solely relying on individual donations and fundraising to make up for the bulk of our operating cost.
How can our readers help?
Subscribing to monthly donations and volunteering.
Do you have any events coming up?
Looking at bringing back TK’s annual fundraising Gala that was halted due to covid-19
