Homegrown Business: Lukas-Karim Merhi & Gautam Sadarangani of Tenzr Health

Tenzr Health has created a way to gamify your at-home physio needs. Through their wearable tech, software applications and accessible virtual clinicians, clients are able to reach their physiotherapy needs and goals from the comfort of their homes, all while having fun doing it. We recently got to speak with founders Lukas-Karim Merhi and Gautam Sadarangani to find out more about them.

What is your business called and what does it do?

Tenzr Health combines intelligent wearable sensors, gamification, and healthcare expertise to provide clinicians and patients with motivation, guidance, and certainty for musculoskeletal care.

What made you want to do this work?

Every founding member of Tenzr Health has been through some form of physical therapy. And every single one of us has fallen short of our goals of full recovery at one point or another. Not because we were lazy, or didn’t have good therapists (we’ve had great ones). But because we couldn’t tell if we were doing the right things or see with certainty how we were progressing and what the finish line looked like. Sometimes, in between visits, we didn’t even know if we were doing our exercises right or if they were actually working.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

Upper body injuries can be difficult to assess and treat. A key part of the rehabilitation process is the healthcare provider teaching patients how to move properly in order to regain mobility or prevent injury. However, they’re limited to prescribing physical workouts that can feel tedious and unengaging. These exercises are often self-guided and not tracked, therefore patients have no way of knowing if they are completing them correctly and rehabilitation professionals have limited insight for clinical decision-making.

Tenzr Health provides rehabilitation specialists with invaluable insights into the recovery of the patient, while also giving patients visual feedback on their movements and recovery.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Any person who is suffering with a hand, wrist, or elbow injury, and those who are looking to prevent injuries.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

Tenzr Health currently operates on a subscription model. The pricing breakdown is:

$49/month for a patient to use at home

$99/month for use in the clinic

Where in the city can we find your profession?

You can find the Tenzr service in six clinics in BC and two clinics in Ontario.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

Q: Does adopting new technology actually help with recovery?

A: Tenzr Health optimizes recovery for patients by making the entire process motivating and fun. Through Tenzr Health, patients are guided through interactive games that provide real-time biofeedback, empowering patients to do their exercises correctly. Maximizing recovery in the clinic and in between visits with their physical therapist, ultimately leading to a more effective rehabilitation journey.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is hearing from patients and rehabilitation specialists on how our service is a game-changer for physical therapy. Hearing that Tenzr Health has given them their quality of life back both makes us feel like we are making a difference and inspires us to continue to push harder.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

What’s the physical therapist’s favourite movie?

The Empire Strikes Back.
