Homegrown Business: Greendale Acres

Greendale Acres is a female-run, family-owned farm in Chilliwack that has been preserving a slice of rural life for visitors for over twenty-five years. They grow and sell flowers, fruits, and vegetables, and also offer immersive, seasonal experiences ranging from their signature corn maze (the first ever in Canada!) to the sweet spring flower festival or annual Easter egg hunt. We spoke to sisters Vanessa, Danielle, and Mariah from the Bruinsma family, who own Greendale Acres, to learn more.

Greendale Acres

What is your business called and what does it do?

Greendale Acres is a family-owned farm in Chilliwack, BC. We offer a variety of seasonal experiences in spring, summer, fall and winter. Special highlights include flower fields, u-pick flower gardens, a corn maze, pumpkin patch, tulip gardens, farm animal encounters, farm games and holiday events with live music and train rides all within a beautiful, laid back farm setting.

What made you want to do this work?

Greendale Acres has been in our family for over 35 years. Growing up on the farm, we saw the potential to share the magic of outdoors and experiences with others. Our passion for farming and the outdoors led us to create a space where families can make lasting memories while learning about farming and experiencing the beauty of the seasons.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

We wanted to provide a space where families could connect with agriculture and with each other. In today’s fast-paced world, we felt it was important to offer a break from technology and an opportunity to reconnect our guests to the joys of nature, farming, and community.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

We serve families, couples, and individuals looking for a fun and educational experience on the farm. Our clientele ranges from young children enjoying the baby animals to adults looking to explore the gardens and seasonal activities. We’re proud to foster a community of people who appreciate the outdoors and enjoy making memories together.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

Our revenue comes from our seasonal experiences, including u-pick flowers, the corn maze, pumpkin patch, and holiday events. We also generate income from our farm store, offering fresh produce, baked goods, and local products. Memberships are another key component, providing unlimited visits and exclusive access to events year-round.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

A great question to ask is, “What makes Greendale Acres unique?” We’d answer by saying that our farm offers an immersive, seasonal experience with something for everyone. From meeting baby animals to exploring the beauty of our gardens and participating in fun activities like our train ride through our farm during all the seasons, there’s always something special happening at Greendale Acres.

Greendale Acres

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part of running Greendale Acres is seeing families connect with the farm and nature, making memories that will last a lifetime. The most challenging part of farming is managing the unpredictable weather and the seasonal demands. However, we’re grateful for the support of our team and the community who help make everything run smoothly.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

Every year, designing the corn maze at Greendale Acres is a meticulous process. Our husbands take the lead, carefully mapping out the intricate design and cutting the paths with precision. It’s a labour of love (and a little stress), but by the end, the aerial view always reveals a masterpiece.

But without fail, every single year, they pull the same prank on us.

Once the cutting is done, they send the drone up for the big reveal. We wait anxiously, excited to see the maze come to life. Then, with perfectly rehearsed panic in their voices, they turn to us and say—“Oh no. We made a huge mistake.”

Our hearts drop. For a split second (okay, maybe longer), we fall for it. Every. Single. Time.

They let us stew in our panic just long enough before they crack a grin and show us the screen—revealing, of course, that the design is perfect.

Where can we follow you?

PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?

There are two farms right down the road from us that we really admire.

We highly recommend Farmhouse Brewing in Chilliwack. It’s a local brewery where you can enjoy their craft beers and delicious pizza, all while relaxing on the spacious grass area. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a visit to the farm!

Also, the Local Harvest Market is a farm right down the road from. They grow the most amazing produce and have a very sustainable and organic farming practice. We are so grateful for the food they grow that fuels our bodies.
