Aerin Wu is an award-winning filmmaker, animator and artist whose work consistently captivates with its creativity and depth. She graduated from USC Film School, but her growth as an artist extends far beyond her education. Growing up in China and having lived between the East and the West, she brings a unique perspective that informs everything she creates.
I’ve known Aerin for about seven years now, and her work still surprises me. She has a quiet precision and emotional depth that few artists can pull off. She doesn’t just animate scenes or draw pretty images; she builds emotional worlds that carry a personal pulse. Her films and drawings are rich with imagination and fantasy, unique in both visual style and emotional honesty. There’s always a sense of wonder and deep sensitivity that make her works stand out.
Now based in Canada, she is freelancing for studios and developing her next short film, and I am excited to see where her vision will take her next.

Which ’hood are you in?
Currently, I live in downtown Vancouver.
What do you do?
I mainly make 2D animations. I write, design and animate. I also draw and paint.
What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working as an animator at a studio, and I’m also writing the script for my next short film.
Where can we find your work?
My film Nono is on a festival run, so it hasn’t been released yet, but stay tuned for festival screenings this year and next year. My mini animated short Super Mr. Woods, made earlier this year for the Hothouse 15 program at the National Film Board of Canada, can be watched on YouTube, on the NFB app and on the NFB’s streaming platform nfb.ca. I’m also featured in a series of BTS stories about Hothouse 15. I also post some of my drawings and illustrations on my Instagram.
