Five Minutes With: Multidisciplinary Musician Jeff Cancade

Back in the mid-80s, from the seedy underbelly of Nanaimo crawled Canada’s first and foremost gaylien, Jeff Cancade aka DEVOURS aka THE GOLDEN AGE OF WRESTLING. Inspired by nü metal, can-con and a dizzying mix of influences they landed in Montreal to form their first project PROFESSOR PSYCHE. Sadly, their avant-garde sound and guerilla marketing techniques were too far ahead of the times to gain any interest or recognition. Migrating to Vancouver in 2010 after years of toiling, DEVOURS was born. Their open-hearted lyrics and incredibly skilled soundscapes completely grabbed the attention of Vancouver’s music scene, cementing themselves as a Vancouver ICON forever and always. All hail JEFF

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

Kinemi’s Kitchen, over in Champlain Heights. Tiny spot, incredible Japanese-style Italian food. Bring cash.

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

I love riding my bike down Main Street (starting at King Ed), heading North, with the mountains in the distance. It’s just really beautiful and lively.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Clark Park is underrated, especially when the sun is setting. I keep going on bad dates there, but I’m trying to turn it around! I also love New Brighton.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Way too hard to pick a favourite – they’re all amazing and deserve kudos for existing/surviving. I always jump at the chance to play Fox Cabaret because I can hear my vocals perfectly when I’m performing there.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

I absolutely adored Virgin Records when I was a kid – it had so many listening stations. Nowadays, Zulu, Neptoon, Red Cat, Audiopile, Vinyl Records in Gastown – honestly all of them haha. Keeping a record store alive in Vancouver is no easy feat – they’re all equally great.
