Meet Tank, a magnificent big boy who is eagerly awaiting his forever home! At the shelter, Tank’s interactions with staff highlight his true, loving nature. He adores his stuffed toys and will hold one in his mouth with big tail wags when he’s happy to see you. Tank loves to play tug and enjoys scratches, leaning against our legs like a big cat when receiving them, and rolling onto his back when he wants belly rubs.
He can be stubborn at times but he is a sweetie that comes with a unique set of challenges that only add to his charm. Tank is ready to go into a loving home after fully recovering from an enucleation. He only has one eye, but still navigates his surroundings well, although he can be more sensitive to environmental stimuli. Tank is startled by fast-moving vehicles and semi-trucks and is currently working on being able to tolerate them. He may occasionally jump towards them and because he is a strong boy, he will need a strong handler to take him on walks.
Tank is still learning to get into kennels, crates, and cars, and we are diligently working on behaviour modification using positive reinforcement to make these experiences more comfortable for him. His future family should be dedicated to continually working on these issues. High-value treats like chicken and Cheese Whiz have proven effective in helping to encourage him.
He can be mouthy when excited, so practising calm interactions with him and training will help him succeed in his new home. We are currently working with Tank on muzzle training, as it is a great skill to have. With continuous and consistent training, Tank is an amazing dog with lots of love to give.
While we have not had the chance to test Tank’s compatibility with other dogs, it is important to note that he has shown barrier reactivity towards the other dogs in our care. He also has a prey drive and will need a home with no other animals. Due to his specific needs, Tank would do best in a household without children.
For the right person or family, Tank promises a heartwarming companionship like no other. If you’re ready to open your heart to a big-hearted dog in need, Tank is waiting to become your loyal and loving companion!
