Refine Fitness Studio in West Vancouver is guided by intention, consistency, and community. While every class at Refine Fitness is designed to challenge the body while cultivating strength, they offer classes to people of all ages and fitness levels. By deliberately keeping class sizes small and intimate, Refine Fitness is able to offer focused and attentive individualized support. We spoke with Lara Volker, Co-Owner and Trainer, to learn more.

What is your business called and what does it do?
Refine Fitness Studio, and we run intimate group fitness classes of different kinds – from Strength to yoga to pilates, for all levels of fitness and all ages: teens to seniors and all in between.
What made you want to do this work?
I started my fitness journey at the age of 14. I was always interested in health and working out. I then decided to become a trainer while being a stay-at-home mom after Covid. I love working out, so I thought I might as well share this with others and make a little money on the side. After training out of a garage for 4 years, it was time to expand and see my dreams come true. I approached my sister-in-law (Now business partner) to join me in the process.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
Women have this image that if they lift weights, they will get big, bulky muscles. I wanted to create a beautiful setting for them to come to so they feel comfortable and able to lift weights and teach them that lifting is good for us and doesn’t make us bulky.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
Mostly women aged 30-60, but we are open to everyone. Men are more than welcome, and we love the diversity of ages and abilities.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
We offer a drop-in rate, but also a variety of packages and memberships. We have a great $50 Intro Week of unlimited classes, 5-Class Packs, 10-Class Packs, and a monthly unlimited membership. We also have some great products we sell in store; Refine sweatshirts, magnesium bath flakes, Tallu room spray, electrolytes, etc.
Where in the city can we find your profession?
We are located in Caulfeild Village in West Vancouver, BC

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services?
What makes your classes feel different from other group fitness classes, and why would I choose yours?
Our classes are intentionally smaller, which allows us to actually see you as an individual and support you. We can assist and guide you more personally, whether you are just starting out or you are more advanced at working out. Our environment is rooted in community and support, we don’t shout and push to keep up intensity. It’s about helping each individual move better, feel stronger and connect with their body.
What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The best part is I get to work out; this is what I love to do, and I get to do it – a lot!
I also love to see others progress and become stronger and feel better about themselves.
The worst part is just always being “on”; you have to be ready to drop everything in a second if you are needed.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
“Instructors who say ‘last one’ are the reason I have trust issues”.
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: What is another local business that you love?
Oh, so many options! We love supporting and cheering on other local businesses, which is why we carry their products like Zone Hydration, Tallu, Mila Earth Magnesium, Bzz Bombs, and Morph Super Food.
