Five Minutes With: Vancouver Funk Band Astrocolor

Astrocolor, three-time Western Canadian Music Award nominees, claimed the Instrumental Artist of the Year title in 2022. With over 15 million streams across major platforms, the band has garnered national airplay on flagship CBC shows like Afterdark and Saturday Night Jazz, and support from prominent U.S. stations such as KCRW in Los Angeles. In 2023, Astrocolor topped the national Earshot jazz chart in Canada with *Moonlighting – AstroJazz Vol. 1.* Their captivating live performances have graced notable festivals, including Bass Coast, Burning Man, Shambhala, Rifflandia, Laketown Shakedown, and the Victoria International Jazz Festival.

While 2023’s *Moonlighting – AstroJazz Vol. 1* explored an interstellar journey through deep space, the forthcoming album *Stargazing – AstroJazz Vol. 2* (releasing November 1, 2024) begins from a terrestrial viewpoint, gazing outward toward the cosmos and inward toward the self.

Hovering between reality and dreamlike illusion, *Stargazing* delves into the intersection of experimental jazz and instrumental psychedelia. Imagine Miles Davis reinventing a modern Four Tet or Bonobo album: deep, moody grooves infused with a rich, organic blend of live instruments. This introspective soundtrack gradually reveals layers, offering a journey through altered states of perception.

*Stargazing*, the band’s sixth studio album, was produced by Neil James Cooke-Dallin as the second instalment of the *AstroJazz* series, a project initiated with Executive Producer Steve Christensen, known for his longtime collaboration with Khruangbin.
