Five Minutes With: Folk-Pop Band Rumour Mill

Rumour Mill is the Folk-pop collaboration of lifelong friends and fellow pre-school comrades, Aline Deanna and Anna Katarina. Rumour Mill began in the mountains of small town Nelson, BC, and the duo now resides in the lower mainland when they are not on tour, which incidentally is most of the year.

Both raised in low-income homes by resilient single mothers, their constant companion through the highs and lows was music. As they embarked on their careers, these best friends discovered that the music industry is not for the faint of heart. Their path unfolded in tandem, a testament to their unwavering support for one another.

In the midst of their creative endeavours, the conversation about their shared history evolved into a profound exploration of identity, empowerment, and breaking through the confines of societal expectations. Rumour Mill’s music is not just a melodic journey; it’s a reflection of two souls bound by friendship, resilience, and a shared love for the transformative power of music. Their true collaboration becomes clear when listening to their solo records, with Aline’s musical stylings centred in Country and Folk while Anna leans into Indie/Pop the combination of these genres is seamless yet notable in their co-written music.

Their first full-length album, What She Said (October 2023) is inspired by the likes of Stevie Nicks, Brandi Carlile and First Aid Kit. It is a collection of beautiful, groovy and memorable songs that feature a lush and groovy topography of violin, keys, guitar and mandolin, led by a narrative of iconic harmonies, produced by Murray Pulver (Crash Test Dummies, The Bros. Landreth) and supported by FACTOR’s Juried Sound Recording grant and Creative BC. It is a culmination of their musical prowess, personal histories, and the unyielding spirit that defines Rumour Mill.

Ahn and Chi

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

The corner of Fraser and 12th because we lived together there and recorded our record “Gone With The Wine”!

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Trout Lake, we used to dress up as princesses and climb into a tree and play music for the kids during the August lantern procession (to be clear this was a paid position and we were invited). It did feel like we were living out some childhood dreams because the kids definitely thought we were real princesses, they clearly didn’t know us.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Guilt & Co

What is your favourite music store in your city?

East Van Long and Mac… it’s not a glamorous answer but she always gets the job done!
