Five Minutes With: Vancouver Folk Rock Musician Heidi Morgan

Heidi Morgan is a folk rock (kinda country) singer/songwriter who has been a grateful guest on the traditional unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples all her life. Heidi has been called Vancouver’s best-kept secret. Probably because most of her adult life has been spent helping people in other ways. She’s always had a hand on music, though and at 51 she’s chasing her dreams. Having previously believed she could not, she’s now set her sights on communicating the truth that we are all already whole, through her music. Her old tag line was: “turning demons into angels since 2003.” It is now, “we are all just walking each other home” (Ram Dass quote). Her voice will pierce your heart and hold it. She has performed in approximately 19 of the 22 years of the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festivals and has a BIG love for the DTES community.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

MILA. A wonderful vegan restaurant in Chinatown (DTES forever!)

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

I would have to say the street I live on. Because when I came to view the place, I felt like I was already home as I drove down the street. And it has the biggest, most beautiful tree that shades my yard and gives my heart joy. I can tell you it is in the Sunset neighbourhood.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

Woodland Park. Some of the tree tops look straight out of a Cat in the Hat book, and it has a great energy. I once walked through it when a jazz band was playing, and it was so peaceful and felt like an easy breezy vibe out of time and space. It was a feeling for the ages, so I bottled a little up in my heart, and I keep it with me even when I’m not there.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

Such hard questions 😉 The Brighton pub has my heart. It’s punk AF and so warm and welcoming. I have the best time there every time I go, whether that is performing there or just hanging out.

What is your favourite music store in your city?

Zulu Records
