Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Emily Woods

Emily Woods delivers raunchy, filthy comedy with a whole lotta heart, channelling the energy of fun, loud, silly women while admitting she grew up thinking Hannah Montana and Raven Baxter were the greatest comedians of all time—a devotion she maintains, eagerly awaiting Montana’s 20-year comeback show. Her debut special, Deep In The Woods, available on YouTube and Spotify, closes with her favourite bit that’s too weird for regular stage time: accepting a raccoon as her father after he starts sleeping with her mom, a joke that requires audiences to be fully on her side.

Emily Woods

How would you describe your comedy style?

My comedy style is very raunchy and filthy, but with a whole lotta heart.

Who are some of your influences?

My influences are fun, loud, silly women like Steph Tolev, Ali Wong and Natalie Palamides.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

Growing up I really didn’t watch any stand-up comedy until I started it when I was 18. I truly thought Hannah Montana and Raven Baxter were the greatest comedians of all time.

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Hannah Montana. I can’t wait for the 20-year comeback show.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I love walking into the green room and just feeling overwhelming gratitude that it’s filled with my buddies.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

It’s so hard to choose a favourite, but I can confidently say my least favourite is Armstrong BC.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

My favourite bit is the last joke on my special, I never tell it on stage because it’s too weird and the audience REALLY has to be on my side. It’s about growing up without a father and then having to accept a raccoon as my father because he’s started sleeping with my mom.

What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?

Just going out to live comedy shows! Also going to alternative shows, improv shows, seeing character comedians, drag artists, my favourite performers are people who do things I could never do.

Tell us a joke about your city.

I spent the last 5 years living in Victoria, so I take the ferry a lot. I love that big boat. I ride it back and forth and don’t even get off sometimes. I’m trying to join the Mile High Club, but on the ferry. I’m trying to join the slightly above sea level club.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

I have my debut comedy special and album available to watch on YouTube or stream on Spotify; it’s called Deep In The Woods.

Where can we follow you?

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?

Julya Van Der Sloot and Patricia Masur are two comedians with whom I had the honour of working for multiple years in Victoria, and now the three of us all live in Vancouver, and it’s the coolest thing in the world, and they are so so funny. Go check them out!
