Ed Witzke is a rising comedic talent whose performances span the vibrant spectrum of improv, stand-up, and character-driven storytelling. Whether he’s crafting richly drawn personas on stage or spinning hilarious, relatable anecdotes, Ed’s style is grounded in authenticity, wit, and a sharp observational eye. Drawing inspiration from icons like Robin Williams and George Carlin, Ed brings a magnetic energy and emotional range that keeps audiences laughing—and sometimes thinking.
How would you describe your comedy style?
I would say in Improv comedy, I am a character comedian driven by story. In stand-up, I am very much an anecdotal and observational humorist. I love telling relatable stories and putting fun spins on everyday things.
Who are some of your influences?
One of the biggest ones for me would be Robin Williams. I believe he truly encapsulated what it means to be an entertainer/performer. Whether he was performing Stand-up, Improv, or legendary comedic film and TV roles, he always captivated his audiences. On top of that, he was also an Oscar-winning dramatic actor. He could make you laugh and make you cry in the same scene. I believe he truly had a gift.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
Growing up, I loved George Carlin. It may be an odd choice, but when I think of watching Stand-up growing up, I just keep picturing George Carlin’s sets. Just his energy and passion with which he spoke and delivered, I was blown away every time. My family also loved watching Just for Laughs, so comedians like John Pinette, Jeremy Hotz, and Steve Harvey were always on.
Who is your favourite comedian now?
Right now, I think Nikki Glaser is at the top of the game. I could watch her roast of Tom Brady 100 times and laugh every time. Nate Bargatze is also so fun to watch. I really enjoy his style and wit. I have also been watching lots of fellow Canadian Phil Hanley, who was a big influence on me when I started in comedy and always puts on an incredible show with his hilarious way of connecting with his audience.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I used to stress about comedy so much, so now my pre-show ritual is just connecting with other performers in the show and talking about weekend plans, summer plans, anything completely unrelated to comedy or to the show. I try to take myself as far away from the show as I can, so when the lights come on, I feel fresh and excited, and can truly enjoy being in the moment.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
I have had the privilege of performing at The Comedy Store and The Laugh Factory in Los Angeles. The Laugh Factory was very fun, as I had the opportunity to open for Kevin Nealon. Both rooms were very warm and fun! In Vancouver, I really enjoy performing at The Underground Comedy club, it’s a very fun room and the staff are very friendly.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I have a current bit about how by the time I get a new family doctor, it will be the youth of today, so my doctor’s appointments will sound like “Well, Mr.Witzke, Low-key your liver is pretty sus. Your blood pressure is poppin off. Gotta cut out the Glizzy’s. You can have salads, leafy greens, no cap. Now I have to take a photo of you to prove that I provided you with medical assistance, and if you could give me a 5-star review, that would be lit.” I like the bit because it’s current and also after having a chat with a fellow comedian’s teenage kids… not far off.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
Facebook, TikTok, any social media. Comedians are coming up all over, and it’s fun to watch everyone’s Reels!
Tell us a joke about your city.
If you ever want to see what Vancouver looks like, just watch any Hollywood movie set in Seattle.
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I will be appearing in the 4th and final season of Amazon’s comedy-drama Upload, airing in the summer!
