Danielle Florence blends bold irreverence with self-aware charm, described humorously as a “slutty virgin discovering a microphone.” Influenced by comedians like Jenny Slate and Steph Tolev, her unique perspective brings both absurdity and relatability to the stage. Having opened for Rick Glassman at the Biltmore, Danielle continues to make waves in the Vancouver comedy scene, with her favourite current show being Josh Romyn’s “True Enough!” Beyond stand-up, she co-hosts the podcast *Soft for Us* and is organizing a charity event, *That’s Showbiz!*, at Little Mountain Gallery on November 7th.
How would you describe your comedy style?
Slutty virgin discovers microphone.
Who are some of your influences?
Jenny Slate, Steph Tolev, Jordan Jensen, Alice Richard.
Who was your favourite comedian growing up?
I didn’t have cable or the internet growing up, so I mainly just watched Titanic on VHS over and over again. So, I guess the iceberg?
Who is your favourite comedian now?
I don’t know if this counts, but I think the funniest person on the internet is Zach Woods, that lanky guy from Silicon Valley. In terms of stand-up comics, I think Geoffrey Asmus is unparalleled.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I pretend to have a phone call while I’m walking to the venue, but I’m actually just running my set. Is that lame, or smart? Or both? Probably both.
What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?
I opened for Rick Glassman at the Biltmore a few months ago, that was really special for me. But my absolute favourite show right now is Josh Romyn’s True Enough! It runs every Wednesday, and it’s always weird and magical. Check it out.
What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?
I have a new bit where I act out unfurling a penis like a scroll, and I’m quite enjoying that because it’s so, so dumb.
What is your favourite medium for listening or finding new comics/comedians?
Live shows, baby.
Tell us a joke about your city.
I can’t. Living here is a joke enough. (woah, that’s so mean, I’m not a mean comic, I love you Vancouver, I’m sorry)
Do you have anything to promote right now?
I co-host a podcast called Soft for Us with gal pals, Amy Walsh & Niki Mohrdar. I’m also running a show at Little Mountain Gallery on November 7th called That’s Showbiz! All proceeds are going to the PCRF, please come!
Where can we follow you?
PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comic/comedian we should know about?
I’m going to shout out some Victoria-based comics, because they’re all insanely talented and have built an incredible scene: Dan Duvall, Emily Woods, Dylan Williams, Max Bank-Jaffe, Julya Vandersloot, Paddy Masur, Nash Park, Alex Foreman, Ellyot Ryan.
