Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.
I dedicate my time and talent to supporting organizations that assist individuals and families facing the realities of cancer. On World Cancer Day (Feb 4), 2024, I launched Cancer Heroes, an anthology of powerful, heartwarming stories of courage, healing, and profound transformation designed to instil hope and faith. Later that year, on November 27th, I launched a proclaimed National Cancer Hero Day with a fundraising event featuring Beauty Beyond Cancer – a unique fashion show, of cancer survivors. Proceeds from these initiatives were directed to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation to fund cancer research.
What problem does it aim to solve?
Cancer impacts the patient and the whole family, mentally, emotionally, and financially. A cancer diagnosis often triggers fear and the perception that it equates to a death sentence. Our mission is to counter this narrative by fostering courage, hope, and faith in individuals and families navigating the cancer journey, empowering them to see beyond their fears and embrace resilience no matter the medical outcome.
When did you start/join it?
I survived metastatic Thyroid cancer in 2013. On the surgery table, I promised my Creator that if I lived, I would dedicate my life to serving people. At that time, I did not know what that would look like. In 2022, I envisioned an anthology of stories about cancer survivorship. This vision came to life on World Cancer Day, February 4th, 2024, with the launch of my anthology, Cancer Heroes.
What made you want to get involved?
As a cancer survivor myself, I intimately understand the journey—the fear, the uncertainty, and the strength it demands. My own lived experiences and those of my children inspired me to create a platform where others could find hope, healing, and empowerment through shared stories.
What was the situation like when you started?
When I began, there was a noticeable reluctance among many to share their cancer stories. Stigma played a significant role—some felt sharing their journey might invite pity or judgment, while others feared it might bring the illness back into their lives.
How has it changed since?
The launch of Cancer Heroes has sparked a movement. Survivors who once hesitated are now stepping forward, realizing how rewarding it is to share their experiences. Their stories have become a beacon of hope and a source of strength for others, proving that storytelling is a powerful act of service and relief.
What more needs to be done?
We need to encourage more men to share their stories, as the majority of contributors so far have been women. Amplifying diverse voices can provide a more holistic view of the cancer journey and inspire even more individuals.
How can our readers help?
