Shelby Gordon, the Family Resource Program Manager for Options Community Services, is making a lasting impact in the Guildford area of Surrey through the Guildford Family Resource Program. This free drop-in service supports families with young children, offering a space for kids to learn and play, while caregivers connect and find essential community resources. Driven by a passion for community and inspired by the lasting bonds these programs create, Gordon sees Family Places as lifelines for families—a place where parents can overcome isolation and build lifelong relationships. Supported by various funders, including the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the program is an invaluable resource as Surrey’s population grows.
What is your business called and what does it do?
Guildford Family Resource Program, we provide a free drop-in program for families with children birth to six years old. The children learn through play, enjoy a healthy snack and gathering time. The caregivers are able to connect with others in their community and access community supports and referrals as needed.
What made you want to do this work?
I’m passionate about working with people and bringing the community together. Family Places are more than just programs – they are lifelines for parents and caregivers who need a safe space to turn to, a listening ear, or just a moment of connection. These places stay in people’s hearts for a lifetime. Often families don’t just attend for a few years; they come back with their grandkids, volunteer, or even build careers within these centres, continuing to support others. That’s the kind of meaningful impact I want to be part of.
What problem did you want to solve with the business?
I wanted to tackle the sense of isolation that many parents and caregivers feel. It’s easy to feel alone in the challenges of raising young children, but Family Places create a welcoming space where families can connect, learn, and grow together. It’s all about fostering relationships that support one another, creating a ripple effect that lasts generations.
Who are your clientele/demographics?
All families are welcome to attend the program that have children birth to six years old.
How does your business make money? How does it work?
The program has various funders and is non-profit. The Guildford Family Resource Program is funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Public Health Agency of Canada and BC Gaming Grant.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?
The people and community are the best, the most challenging part is meeting the demand of service as Surrey continues to grow at a fast pace.
What is your favourite joke about your own profession?
It’s not so much a joke, but as a family support worker, I like to say I’m a ‘professional cheerleader’ – minus the pom-poms, but with plenty of high-fives and ‘you got this’ pep talks!
