“A Day in the Life” with: Vancouver Dancer Amanda Testini

It seems that there are never enough hours in the day for Amanda Testini. A true jack of all trades, Amanda seemingly has more energy in her little toe than I do in my entire body. I know this because I’m her roommate, and she’s often worked out, sent emails, journaled, chatted on the phone with a friend and made a smoothie before I’ve even gotten out of bed. Sheesh. It’s hard to hold it against her though, because paired with this tremendous drive is an incredibly genuine, optimistic, hilarious and tiny (she’s 5’1”) person. Amanda brims with enthusiasm, intelligence and curiosity, traits that she takes into both her friendships and her work.

As far as work goes, Amanda does it all: she is a dancer, a choreographer, an actor, a director of both theatre and opera, she sings, she plays the guitar, and as if that wasn’t enough, she’s also a certified Lagree instructor. She has toured Canada as an actor, choreographed for the Arts Club Theatre, Bard on the Beach, and Theatre Replacement’s beloved annual East Van Panto (she has been the choreographer for six straight pantos, with a seventh coming up this fall), assistant directed for numerous productions at Vancouver Opera, most recently The Magic Flute, and just finished her second year as a young artist at the Glimmerglass Festival for opera.

One of the things I most admire about Amanda’s artistic practice is her passion for choreographing ‘non dancers’: ie: actors and singers. Instead of viewing a lack of formal dance training as an obstacle to overcome, Amanda sees this rawness as a gift and loves exploring and shaping the unexpected and individualistic interpretations that come about. This unfussy and person-lead approach bleeds over into all of her work and makes for art that is imbued with personality and warmth. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Amanda Testini
Hi! I’m Amanda Testini and I’m a performer/director/choreographer who lives on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. I’m dancing the Owl in Sophie Dow’s Agrimony this fall. Tavia is dancing the Coyote, Mohammed, the Rabbit, and in this photo, you can also see our fearless leader Sophie Dow, our dramaturg, Meg, and another friend and outside eye, Kiera.

Hailing from East Van, I have the pleasure of living with a wonderful artist and friend, Molly, and her excellent cat, Sophie. Here she is enjoying our lovely backyard.
I travel a fair amount for work. Sometimes it’s bittersweet to leave home for big stretches of time, but mostly it’s exciting because I get to explore, meet amazing people, get pushed out of my comfort zone, and see some beautiful places – like this! Here I am at Lake Louise in Banff, Alberta.
Whenever I arrive back in Vancouver, the first thing I always want to do is go to the beach to be close to the Pacific Ocean. The salty smell of the air and the sound of the crashing waves feel like home.
Sometimes my work looks like this: here I’m teaching some choreography for E. Loren Meeker’s La Boheme at the Glimmerglass Festival. (this photo features Josh Blue and Nan Wang and was taken by Evan Zimmerman.)
And sometimes it looks like this: here I’m about to start some prep work for an upcoming project. Even though a lot of my work happens in a rehearsal room, just as much happens beforehand, preparing for those rehearsals.

I adore my friends and family. To me, humans are what it’s all for. Here are some wonderful artists and pals hanging out in the York Theatre during a Panto technical rehearsal.

Speaking of great humans – here is the Agrimony crew at the Harbourfront Centre from our shows in Toronto earlier this year! We hope to see you at the show in Vancouver coming up! Xo
