Five Minutes With: Vancouver Contemporary Pop Musician Calvyn Cass

Calvyn Cass is an artist carving out his own lane in a culture conflicted with change. With many artists on the scene embracing their gender fluidity it made way for Calvyn’s artistic expression. Calvyn dives right in with a soulful voice uncharacteristically influenced by artists he loves; Celine Dion, Tina Turner, Bryan Adams, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi and Mariah Carey to name a few. His lyrical writing style pays homage to 90s pop, while his instrumental arrangements seamlessly blend the nostalgic echoes of the early 2000s with the sounds of today.

He burst onto the music scene in 2020 with his debut single, “ME, Myself and I.” Since that pivotal moment, his musical journey has transcended boundaries, garnering international radio airplay, press coverage, and amassing hundreds of thousands of global streams.

Calvyn is on the cusp of unveiling a captivating two-part album, featuring tracks by multi-platinum producers Adam H. (Ray J, Ne-Yo, Elise Estrada, Def Leppard, and Loverboy) and rock royalty Dave Genn (54/40 and Matthew Good Band).

Part One of this album was released in March 2024, titled “Every Kind Chapter One: Reigning Stars,” which kicks off with its standout track, “Ménage à Trois.” This playful and fun song delves into the fantasy of having a Ménage à Trois. The track was brought to life by the collaborative genius of hit producer Adam H. and songwriters Calvyn Cass, Adam H., Don Wolf and Jess Edo.

The spark behind this catchy tune ignited during a writing session where Calvyn shared his desire to write something fun and sexy and suggested the concept of a song celebrating his experience of being in a throuple. “I pitched the idea to the group and everyone jumped on board,” Calvyn explains, shedding light on the song’s inception.

Ménage à Trois follows the album’s debut track, “Hollywood Calls,” a sultry lyrical collaboration between Calvyn Cass and Jess Edo, produced by the esteemed EastBLVD Studios. Calvyn states: “Growing up in the age of cinema and movie romance shaped my expectations of falling in love. This is a song about that Hollywood kind of romance. It’s dark and sexy and full of temptations.” “Ménage à Trois” emerges as a fitting successor.

Calvyn Cass’s impressive accolades include a coveted spot on Tom Lambert’s featured artists list, with a streaming presence on over 1800 stations worldwide. He’s garnered over 1.16 million Spotify streams, half a million YouTube views, maintained a presence on the German Blues charts for an impressive 10 months, and even surprised audiences as a guest performer for the TRND app, reaching a staggering viewership of 15 million.

With a mission to unite people of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and gender identities through his music, Calvyn Cass’s latest project is a testament to the power of shared connection and inclusivity.

Favourite musician now:

I love to listen to a lot of different music because I love hearing other people’s creations. The one person I’ve been returning to the most this past year is Charlotte Cardin. Her voice is so smooth.

Guilty pleasure song:

Greedy by Tate McRae or One Of Your Girls by Troye Sivan

Live show ritual:

I’m so distracted by my life that I find myself putting my own music on in order to focus. It’s to immerse myself into the music world I’ve created for myself. It’s like walking around in a virtual reality of my own creation and out of the real world

Favourite local musician:

I’m not a “favourites” person when it comes to artists. Variety is the sweet nectar of life in my opinion. I do have tons of favourite songs from local musicians I love: Carly Rae Jepsen, Elise Estrada, Mathew V, Desiree Dawson, Michael Bublé, Nickelback, Tegan and Sara, Riun Garner.

EP or LP?

Part one is out now in the form of an EP but it’s the first half of a long play body of work.

Early bird or night owl?

I prefer mornings but my anxiety keeps me up at night so I keep as much sleep as I can in the mornings at the moment.

Road or studio?

Studio! I love creating and making art with people.

Any shows or albums coming up?

I recently dropped part one of my first full-length project. It represents one singular person experience with love over the course of their life. Part two is finished and ready to go but we are going to announce a date very soon.
