Homegrown Business: Luvia Petersen of Liquid Amber Tattoo and Art Collective

Liquid Amber Tattoo and Art Collective is a safe and welcoming space in Vancouver BC. Their desire to see more women in the industry led them to build and create a joy-filled environment where newbies and veterans alike can get a beautiful and skilful piece of art. We got a chance to connect with co-owner Luvia Petersen to learn more.

What is your business called and what does it do?

Our business is called Liquid Amber Tattoo and Art Collective. We are a queer, women-led tattoo studio that offers custom and cosmetic tattoos alongside our art gallery which showcases local artists.

What made you want to do this work?

In 2001, Justina (my business partner) and I were inspired to contribute to the rise of women in the tattoo industry. We have seen the industry shift in a HUGE way and we are so proud to be a part of that evolution and growth. Now, when we attend tattoo conventions, we are almost never asked if our boyfriends are tattoo artists.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

When we first started our business we noticed most tattoo studios felt unwelcoming and intimidating. We wanted to create a space where everyone felt welcomed no matter if it was their first tattoo or if they were tattoo veterans.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Art enthusiasts of all kinds walk into our studio. Specifically, I would say young professionals between 25-40.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

Our main income stream is tattoos. Clients work with an artist of their choice and then pay for that service. We also sell merchandise, aftercare products and local art in our art gallery.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

We are located at 902 Commercial Drive, Vancouver.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

Question 1: Can I see examples of your work?

Answer 1: Absolutely! If the work is in the style you are looking for, you may have found your artist.

But you should probably have a follow-up question before proceeding:

Question 2: Are you health board approved?

Answer 2: Absolutely, and here is my health board approval certificate. All health board-approved studios will be able to provide you with a certificate of approval as the city of Vancouver conducts annual checks of licensed tattoo studios.

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

The best part is providing clients with a joyful experience that results in beautiful body art they will love for the rest of their lives. The worst part is having to communicate with the 1% of people who are cruel, mean and or belligerent to our staff. We find this is typically the result of miscommunication because most people are truly kind.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

People like to know the ‘meaning’ behind a tattoo. Sometimes there is one and it’s profound and life-changing… but other times, people want to get a tattoo, and that’s enough. So, we have the following sign posted in our bathroom:
