Robbie Winsor is a Newfoundland-born, Vancouver-based musician who blends folk-inspired harmonies with home-brewed soundscapes to create some amalgamation of folky-poppy-jazzy-sounds. She takes elements of her home province’s kitchen-party approach to music, using things like spoons, drumsticks on walls and counters, foot stomps, etc., and combines them with soft melodies, haunting vocal layers, and acoustic instrumentation, to create a bittersweet blend of music unique to her. Robbie’s songwriting focuses heavily on the nature of her relationships with friends, family, death, religion, and self, oftentimes revealing an excessive amount of personal information in the process. All in all, Robbie’s music provides a deeply reflective musical experience for her listeners.

Favourite musician growing up:
Simon and Garfunkel and Billy Joel. I still play “Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits” any time I’m about to get on a flight or start a long journey on my own. It reminds me of travelling with my family.
Favourite musician now:
I listen to Wild Child constantly, but I’m also partial to Lake Street Dive. But truly, Wild Child has me in a death grip.
Guilty pleasure song:
I listen to “We Didn’t Start the Fire” a lot but I cannot for the life of me remember all the words, so I feel pretty guilty about that.
Live show ritual:
I get my free drink (always go for a Moscow Mule) and try to kill my nerves. I’m still really uncomfortable before any show starts. And during the show. And after.
Favourite local musician:
Tiger Really, at the moment! I would also highly recommend Kyle Stibbs.

Early bird or night owl?
Night owl, but only by virtue of being a terrible early bird. I’ve always wanted to be a morning person, but I can’t wake up without four alarms, and those people who go for runs at 7 a.m. make me unreasonably mad.
Road or studio?
Studio? Nobody’s ever let me on the road before.
Any shows or albums coming up?
I got a few things coming up! I have a new single released on November 3 called “We’re in My Car and I’m Not There”, and I have a couple more songs lined up following that. Each one is a bit of a different flavour, and I had a ton of fun recording them, so I’m really excited for them to be out! Unfortunately, I won’t have any shows for a while because I’m out of town for school for a bit.

What is your favourite local restaurant?

What is your favourite street in your city and why?
I love Quebec St. There are little patches along Quebec in the spring that just burst with cherry blossoms and I think it’s beautiful. Plus, it leads right to the water which is dope.
What is your favourite park in your city and why?
I don’t even know the name but it’s one right by the Kits/Fairview border on West 12th. Just this little open field where my friends and I would go to play cards and Spikeball. I have a lot of sweet summertime memories there.
What is your favourite music venue in your city?
Best concert I’ve ever seen was at the Imperial, so I’m gonna go with that.
What is your favourite music store in your city?
Honestly, I rarely go to music stores, but I love being in that one spot in Granville? Gandharva. They got so many cool sounds and I bought a really cute little shaker from there which has been a game-changer for my at-home demos.
