Tragedy Plus Time: Comedian Bonggun Kim

Bonggun Kim delivers animated, storytelling-driven comedy rooted in cultural clash, blending Kevin Hart’s energy and expressions with Louis C.K.’s intelligent layering and Ricky Gervais’ fearless approach to uncomfortable truths—though his current favourite comedian is himself, every day, all day. His proudest bit recounts his first dick pic experience, a raw, honest story with every element needed to consistently crush, reflecting the complete structure he’s honed since friends and fellow comedians became his greatest influence.

How would you describe your comedy style?

Animated, storytelling-driven, and rooted in cultural clash.

Who are some of your influences?

In the beginning, it started with Kevin Hart — he showed me what stand-up comedy really is. As I grew in my career, I started exploring more voices.

My big three are Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., and Ricky Gervais.

After that, my greatest influence has been my friends — mostly comedians — who helped shape who I am today.

Who was your favourite comedian growing up?

My big three were Kevin Hart, Louis C.K., and Ricky Gervais.

I aim to mix all three of them together:

-Kevin Hart’s energy, animated expressions, and strong storytelling
-Louis C.K.’s intelligence, layered jokes, and humanity — even when talking about sensitive topics
-Ricky Gervais’ ruthless and fearless way of approaching life’s problems and uncomfortable truths

Who is your favourite comedian now?

Myself. Every day, all day.

What is your pre-show ritual?

I go in with the mindset that we’re going to have a good time.

I tell myself: “I’ve done everything I could to prepare up until this point. Now it’s about having fun together.” Once I step on stage, it’s all about sharing happiness.

What is your favourite place you have performed? Why?

Halifax.

People there didn’t hold back — they laughed as hard as possible and were ready to participate. We didn’t just make their night — they made our Halifax memory unforgettable.

Sometimes audiences can be sensitive at live shows. It can be because of personal struggles or political viewpoints that don’t match mine. I don’t usually talk politics, but occasionally you see people interrupt comedians on the same show. Halifax wasn’t like that — they were just ready to have fun.

What is your favourite bit you have written and why were you proud of it?

My “first time getting a dick pic” story.

It’s raw, honest, and has every element a great story needs. It consistently crushes, and I’m proud of how complete and structured it feels.

What is your favourite medium for discovering new comedians?

Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.

Tell us a joke about your city.

Toronto is incredibly multicultural — one of the most diverse cities in the world.

That cultural vibrance is beautiful, but it can also feel overcrowded. If you really want to understand Canada, this is where you start.

Very friendly — but also very messy.

Do you have anything to promote right now?

Two Asian One Mic – Canadian Comedy Tour

Starting March 5th through the third weekend of May, Andrew Peng (Chinese, from Vancouver) and I (Korean, from Toronto) are touring across Canada.

We’ll make your night feel like a spicy Asian New Year celebration.

Where can we follow you?

PAY IT FORWARD: Who is another local comedian we should know about?

Hadi Kubba – A very funny, fast-paced stand-up comedian from Montreal.

Andrew Peng – His perspective and delivery style are uniquely hilarious.
