Five Minutes With: Vancouver-based Indigenous Queer Pop Artist Edzi’u

Step into the lush and heart-wrenching sounds of Edzi’u. Based in Vancouver, Canada on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations, Edzi’u is a non-binary 2spirit Indigiqueer femme whose strength of identity resonates through their music.

A fierce spirit combined with elegant grace, their new EP Tunnel Vision is a poignant exploration of the cruelty of heartbreak, the painful truth of mistreatment, and the radiant journey of resurgence. With vulnerability and fortitude, each song lingers within the listener like a cherished memory.

Edzi’u’s music is full of thick synths, drums dripping with reverb and a mix of a modern take on 80’s and 90’s sounds that blends the nostalgic essence of Stevie Nicks, the raw emotional depth of Sharon Van Etten, and the atmospheric electronic textures of DRAMA.

The result is a sonic river of pain and beauty that sweetly soars into a singular, healing journey. Edziu is the gentlest balance of hard and soft, who invites listeners into an auditory sanctuary of refuge and revelation.

Rapid Fire Local Questions:

What is your favourite local restaurant?

My favourite restaurant in Vancouver is Anh and Chi. I’m obsessed with the wallpaper and I love a cutie little cocktail with my lemongrass chicken.

What is your favourite street in your city and why?

I love Commercial Drive because it’s always full of Indigenous aunties and youth which makes me feel comfortable and at home. It’s the street I’ve always lived near since I moved to the Musqueam Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh territories.

What is your favourite park in your city and why?

I’ve had many a romantic date moment, heartbreaking crying journal moment and community party moment in the very unassuming small park behind my apartment. It’s definitely the community hub for the neighbourhood, and there’s a little grassroots bocce ball group that hangs out there nearly every day. It’s very cute and everyone is welcome, it attracts people from all walks of life who you wouldn’t think would spend time together otherwise. I love it when people connect in that way.

What is your favourite music venue in your city?

I love the Commodore, I’ve seen big acts there before they’ve blown up and I love an old haunted venue.

What is your favourite music store in your city?’

Definitely Highlife Records on Commercial Drive. When I was a teenager and would come to Vancouver from Whitehorse Yukon, I would go there and spend a couple of hours listening to music and buying CDs. I would spend all my travel money there. I still go in sometimes and poke around and relive my youth.
