Charitable Choices: Helen Lo of the Fraser River Discovery Centre

In an engaging interview, Helen Lo, Public Engagement Manager at the Fraser River Discovery Centre, provides a glimpse into the centre’s mission and activities. Since joining the team in May 2024, Helen has been dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Fraser River’s rich history and ecological significance. With a background in environmental education and a master’s degree in forestry from UBC, Helen brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her role.

Fraser River Discovery Centre

Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.

Fraser River Discovery Centre allows you to explore the stories and diversity of the entire Fraser River. Through rotating exhibits and hands-on programs, the Fraser River Discovery Centre presents the river’s contribution to the life, history, and future of British Columbia and its people. The Discovery Centre also seeks to connect communities up- and down-river and to provide a place to discuss, debate, and showcase the living, working Fraser River.

What problem does it aim to solve?

Our vision is a living, working Fraser – with thriving peoples, ecosystems, and livelihoods – from headwaters to the Salish Sea. Our mission is to bring together the many voices of the Fraser to discover, celebrate, and inspire passionate stewards of the River.

When did you start/join it?

I joined the Centre in May 2024.

What made you want to get involved?

I have been working in the field of environmental education in Hong Kong for several years. After completing my master’s degree in forestry at UBC, I’m fortunate enough to continue my environmental education journey on the other side of the world.

What was the situation like when you started?

I actually started my job here 2 days after my last exam at UBC. There was (and still is!) so much to learn every day!

How has it changed since?

I have been coordinating a temporary exhibition at the Centre, Semá:th Xo:tsa: Great Gramma’s Lake, which was developed by The Reach Gallery Museum. One part of our permanent exhibition will be changed to showcase this temporary exhibition. From June 29th to September 2nd, witness the beauty of Semá:th Xo:tsa through illustrations from the children’s book and three large animal puppets!
