Homegrown Business: Crystal Cornthwaite of Pacific Arts Market

What is your business called and what does it do?

Pacific Arts Market. Gives local artists the opportunity to display and sell their work, and supports the local art community.

What made you want to do this work?

I’ve always valued community, locally made items and art. I used to discourage people from shopping at and supporting big box chains, so one day I decided to put my money where my mouth was. I looked at what was generally available to local artists and makers. At the time it was mainly day or weekend-long events, or high-end Galleries that are difficult to get into and take a large commission. I thought what if I can offer something more semi-permanent, and give artists full control over their displays and sales? So in 2018, the 4 week-renewable rental options began.

What problem did you want to solve with the business?

The lack of affordable, semi-permanent spaces for local makers, artists and small businesses. Also, striving to improve the local art community as a whole in the Vancouver area. I also bring a business sense into the world of art. My background is in business development and marketing, my goal is to help develop the businesses of local artists and makers.

Who are your clientele/demographics?

Artists, makers, and small businesses, rent spaces within my business in order to display and sell their work. Local residents and tourists of all demographics visit when searching for gifts, art, and locally made items.

How does your business make money? How does it work?

I rent space to local artists and makers on a 4 week renewable basis. I also hold regular workshops and events.

Where in the city can we find your profession?

We are now operating on Vancouver Island.

What is the best question a prospective customer could ask a member of your profession when comparing services? Give the answer as well.

What is the best way for me to get involved while my work is being displayed at Pacific Arts Market?

I recommend that you are active within the community and with marketing and promotions. You should aim to spend time at the Arts Market, especially during events. You should also actively promote yourself and the Arts Market in various ways, for which we offer full support. It’s also recommended that you consider hosting your own event or workshop in the space, which we also assist with. There are so many great ways to be involved!

What is the best part about what you do? What is the worst part?

I absolutely love what I do, on good days it is very rewarding. I’d like to think that on some level I am making a difference. I love seeing an artist make a sale, or even how excited they get when showing their work for the first time. I’ve been a part of so many 1st time sales and shows, it’s all so wonderful.

It’s difficult managing and taking on the responsibility for each business under my roof. I want each and every person to succeed, and when they struggle or get frustrated it’s very hard to not take it personally.

What is your favourite joke about your own profession?

Working with artists is like herding cats. And I mean that from an absolutely loving place! Again, I truly love what I do. It’s me who brings the business side of things into the art world. Many artists struggle in this area while being incredibly talented in their own areas.
