“A Day in the Life” with Vancouver Tattoo Artist Justina Kervel

In the early 2000s, during her travels to Europe, Justina Kervel became inspired to open her own tattoo studio in Vancouver, BC. Upon her return and alongside her business partner Luvia Petersen, they embarked on a mission to contribute to the rise of women in the tattoo industry, and in 2001 Liquid Amber Tattoo was born.

Since then, Justina has prioritized sharing her knowledge of tattooing by apprenticing numerous artists, both women and men, all while growing her tattoo studio. In addition to tattooing, Justina’s artistic talents span across various mediums including drawing, painting, wood burning, clay, and soapstone. Her work has been featured in magazine publications, television and radio interviews, and she has earned accolades at international tattoo conventions. Justina specializes in Pop Surrealism and is recognized as an expert in multiple tattoo styles.

She now resides in Langley BC with her two children and partner Jacklyn.

Which ‘hood are you in?

Currently reside in Langley but my tattoo shop is in East Vancouver.

What do you do?

I am an owner and tattoo artist at Liquid Amber Tattoo and Art Collective Inc. I am also an artist working with multi mediums such as oil, acrylic, watercolour, soapstone, and wood.

What are you currently working on?

I’m currently preparing for an upcoming show titled “Painting the Path,” which will debut on March 23rd from 7-10 pm at Liquid Amber Tattoo Studio. This mixed-medium exhibition features paintings, woodwork, and functional art inspired by life’s lessons, human emotions, and the natural world. I aim to create art that not only captivates the eye but also engages the sense of touch, immersing viewers in textures and emotions. Through this sensory experience, I hope to convey stories of resilience, beauty, and the indomitable power of the human spirit.

Where can we find your work?

With over 20 years of experience in tattooing, most of my art lives on the bodies of countless clients. I would estimate over 4,000 people are wearing my tattoos.

In addition to my work adorning skin, you can also experience my art on canvas at Liquid Amber Tattoo. Join us for the showcase opening on March 23rd from 7-10 pm at 902 Commercial Drive.
