“A Day in the Life” with: Gastown Magazine’s Claudia Schulz and Trevor Brady

Claudia Schulz arrived in Canada from her home in Berlin, Germany. Living in a new city, she wanted to explore the idea of tradition set in a new landscape. Claudia studied the fine craft of millinery design and began her own practice using the same solid wood blocks as the ones she apprenticed on. Claudia hand-forms each of her hats following minimalistic design principles with simple lines and form. The result is a series of clean line designs that are sought after by an international clientele. Claudia’s muse comes from the city’s architecture and modern structured lines, which inform her artistic practice. She sees herself as a collaborator of traditional skills practicing her craft and its applications in a new, modern city, bridging both fashion and design.

Which neighbourhood are you in?

Trevor: We love living in Gastown, Vancouver, for its historic architecture, cute shops and cafes, splattered with edgy and gritty character, which has kept us here for the past 20 years. I’m originally from Cape Town and my wife Claudia is from Berlin. Gastown has a hint of the grittiness of Berlin, with its scarred architecture tagged with vibrant character. We love stepping into the action, with all its surprises for coffee or a bite at the many neighbourhood cafes and restaurants like Milano Coffee, Birds and the Beets, Skewer, or Oku.

What do you do?

Trevor: I’m a Photographer, and Claudia is a Milliner/fashion designer.

What are you currently working on?

Trevor: We have just finished producing the Fall 2025 issue of Gastown Magazine, a local, free, editorial-style magazine, so check that out in our neighbourhood when you visit a cafe or one of the amazing shops.

Claudia launched her Fall 24/25 hat collection “ Vagabond” at www.claudiaschulz.com. She is also a co-founder of POP UP by TONE EDITION running until Nov 11 in Gastown. POP UP is a curated show of hand-crafted works of designed objects, fashion, jewellery and art. We have a small label – TONE EDITION where we design and release small limited editions, namely CSxTE pants and the “Proof of Work” RainCoat/Jacket, a waxed cotton raincoat that folds into a shorter jacket.

I’m currently working on an ongoing series of portraits, “Stopped,” where I stop people on the street who catch my attention, and some of these can be seen at @stoprevd.
