“A Day in the Life” with local creative Randi Obenauer

Randi Obenauer is a leatherworker from Powell River, B.C. Throughout her craftwork, there is the ineffable quality of Randi herself. A loving mother, fiercely loyal friend, reader, swimmer, dreamer, motorcycle rider, and firestarter. She is a driven woman whose craft and lifework reflect her passion; unique and authentic to its core.

Formally trained in fashion, upholstery, and design, Randi found her niche in work at her twin brands Ora & Aro. Ora Leather Goods, founded in 2006, explores Randi’s vision for sustainable, slow-fashion accessories. The brand has earned a following of obsessive collectors for its iconic range of styles, often released in limited edition. Aro Upholstery spotlights her passion for motorcycles and riding through custom seats that marry quality fabrication with expressive design, often reflecting the personalities of Randi and her clientele.

It’s impossible to ignore the evolution of her brands as they have occurred alongside Randi herself. I view her body of work as an extension of her spirit; the motorcycle seats taking her on her next ride or the bag she uses to haul her gear to the beach for a dip. Her designs are functional because they are thoughtful and anchored in love for her life and her craft, at once artful and built to last.

Which ‘hood are you in?

I live in a rural neighbourhood on the upper Sunshine Coast, just south of Powell River. My workshop is in my yard, near the creek and the fruit trees, and just a quick stroll from the beach.

What do you do?

I make leather backpacks and accessories, one by one, for my line Ora Leather Goods. I also do custom motorcycle seats via my business Aro Upholstery.

What are you currently working on?

I am working on a handful of capsule collection to release for the holidays, so many fun leather colours! And one of a kind pieces.

Where can we find your work?

You can find my work via my websites oraleathergoods.com and aro-upholstery.com, on Instagram at @oraleathergoods and @aro_upholstery. You can also find my Ora goods at beautiful Open House in Victoria BC, and other stockists across BC.
