Describe your charity/non-profit/volunteer work in a few sentences.
ACCESS is a non-profit organization providing training and employment opportunities for Urban Indigenous Peoples across Metro Vancouver.
What problem does it aim to solve?
Our goal is to close the gap and create pathways for Indigenous individuals to succeed and thrive in the workforce.
When did you start/join it?
I have been honoured to serve with ACCESS for 19 years.
What made you want to get involved?
It is deeply rewarding to witness the transformation of individuals as they move from poverty and hopelessness to meaningful careers that lift them up and strengthen their families.
What was the situation like when you started?
Over the years, ACCESS has grown and refined its ability to serve the community—moving the dial on access, opportunity, and success for our people.
How has it changed since?
We know that we have only just begun. As our urban Indigenous population continues to grow, we must work through the impacts of history and focus on improving conditions through education and employment.
What more needs to be done?
We are always seeking partnerships that help raise awareness and expand opportunities for Indigenous learners and job seekers. You can learn more about what we do as an organization here.
Do you have any events coming up?
On December 18, we will proudly celebrate the graduation of three trades training classes, marking an important milestone for our students and community.
PAY IT FORWARD: What is an awesome local charity that you love?
ACCESS is also supported by our charitable arm, the Urban Spirit Foundation, which provides scholarships, emergency assistance, a back-to-school backpack program, and a children’s Christmas party—helping to uplift our community in meaningful ways.
